The one in the library is across the street from the music building. Part of the reason I went there so much was because I didn't want to walk all the way to the HUC, which probably wasn't even half a mile away. Convenience is niiiiiiice.

This just p***es me off! I'm having to pay over $20,000 in student loans ($260 a month) just for my undergraduate from UAB and it's going to fund nonsense like video game centers and Panera Bread. Meanwhile, I can't find a "real" job in this terrible economy with my UAB degree....

He was answered by a poster who claimed to have found a job in his field in a couple of months. There are so many variables in job searches that you can't really tell from a short note if it is a systemic problem or a personal one.

There's already a new Firehouse in 5 Points, doubt they allow franchises to open so close to each other.

Saturating the Birmingham market didn't fare too well for them last time. But I'm sure they'll keep both open since they are on campus.

If any of these duplicate what is already nearby, it might be something else.

Maybe they can arrange a drive-through and get a Chik-fil-A.

Back in 1970, it was Pete's, The Spinning Wheel (SE corner of 20th and 8th) or bring it from home.

Why on Earth would they put in a drive through? That is the most bizarre suggestion I've ever heard. There was a Chik Fil A and a Taco Bell in the HUC before they tore it down. I believe they are supposed to come back.

No one forced her to go to UAB or to major in whatever she majored in, and her money has already paid UAB. She's paying back the loan, not UAB. She's not paying for the new student center, current and future students are. Obviously UAB failed her on multiple levels if she doesn't realize that.

Yeah. The field matters a lot too. Many of the UAB students I know in computer science have multiple job offers before they graduate. I'm sure it could be more difficult outside technology and engineering fields.

This is the first time I've seen the "Long-Term Vision" slide without the Horseshoe located on the coveted site. It looks like three intramural fields.

They changed it shortly after the stadium was dropped from the Board meeting agenda. However, the "official" one on the UAB site (http://www.uab.edu/plan/concept-of-future-campus) still shows the stadium (it still shows the old HUC, though, so its very likely it just hasn't been updated).

That plan has been modified and changed since it was first released, it didn't have this new student center on it. I wouldn't read too much into it. The "space" for the stadium is still essentially reserved by those intramural/practice fields should approval ever come.

I had job offers from all 3 places I interviewed before graduating.

Fat Sams would be awesome there, but the real question is could he get the signature Fat Sams smell in the new building?

I don't know if anyone has looked closely at the south part of the "Long Range Vision" map, but it shows new UAB buildings where both Al's, Purple Onion, and Fat Sam's are located.

I posted this version back on Nov. 1st... looks to be the same as what is in the article about the HUC.

I would expect Chick fil A and Taco Bell to return to the student center as well.

Other choices for "a local restaurant" might be Full Moon BBQ, Sneaky Pete's (since his original place was on 8th across from the Towne House in 1970), Quisnos or Subway for deli style sandwiches or some kind of cafeteria serving "meat and three" and a variety of soups.

That was a joke based upon the debate about the Chic-fil-A at Five Points South. Have you forgotten that episode already?

No, but the HUC already had a Chik-Fil-A, so it didn't really make any sense. Some idiot on al.com also suggested that there be underground parking for the people who work in the building. These days you never really know anymore.
