Rice's Conference Mates: 100 Years of Athletic Affiliations
With the first visit of C-USA member Old Dominion University's baseball team to Rice this weekend I began thinking about all of the schools Rice has been affiliated with in the 100 years since the founding of the Southwest Athletic Conference in 1914. I know there have been several threads about our conference affiliations but I don't' recall a listing of the schools Rice has been associated with over those 100 years. So, I made list!

Rice University and its associated athletic conference schools over the years (let me know if I missed any):

1. Southwest Conference (12)

Rice was a Founding Member of the SWC in 1914.

Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma A&M (OK State), Southwestern U, Phillips U, SMU, TCU, Texas Tech, Houston

2. Western Athletic Conference (16)

Rice joined the WAC in 1996 as a Full Member

BYU, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado State, UTEP, San Diego State, UNLV, Hawaii, Air Force, Boise State, Fresno State, TCU, SMU, Tulsa, San Jose State, Nevada, Louisiana Tech

3. Conference USA (15)

Rice joined C-USA in 2005 as a full member

Southern Miss, UAB, Memphis, Tulane, Houston, East Carolina, Central Florida, SMU, Tulsa, Marshall, UTEP, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee State, U North Texas, Old Dominion, UTSA, Western Kentucky, N Carolina Charlotte

The bottom line:

Since 1914, Rice has been affiliated with 43 schools in athletics. 04-jawdrop

I believe you left out UNLV in the WAC (they were the 8th member who left for MWC, Nevada, Boise, and LaTech joined later).

I haven't checked all your numbers, but I counted 18 in the WAC (when you add in UNLV), although you may have omitted SMU and TCU due to overlap with the SWC.

I counted schools only once, since there were some overlaps.
However, I did leave UNLV out. Good catch Rick!
So, that raises the total to 43.

How about schools affiliated in only one sport, or did you limit the list to all-sports members?

To keep it simple I limited it to full members.

I am not surprised that UNLV was missed.

We never played them in football in the WAC-16, since the rotating quadrants plan was never implemented before the MTN West break off occurred.

It wasn't called Southwestern Athletic Conference. That's the SWAC.

The SWC was the Southwest Conference.

Yes we did. Beat them 38-0 in Rice Stadium. Can't recall the year.

It was a non-conference game in 1995, when they were in the Big West.

Partial fail on my part. The final score actually was 38-16. I think we'd jumped out to a 38-0 lead, but you're right, I could've been confusing that with the 1995 game.

In any event, looks like we did play them once in league play; it was Nov. 14, 1998, in Rice Stadium. As I recall, Dan Dawson had a 108-yard (officially 100-yard) TD interception return in that game.

I'm curious. How many other schools have had 43 conference mates in 100 years?
SMU comes to mind. Maybe TCU?

What is the significance? How many conference brethren has Ball State or Central Michigan had? Indiana?

Was that the return where he had to bob and weave and perhaps run 150 yards for that TD? I seemed to recall that there was a video of that, but I could not find it on the net. Dan was a ballhawk, he was a really fun player to watch.

Not sure on those (don't have the data handy), but, for comparison's sake (and since I remembered the names offhand), Texas A&M has had 30 (12 others in the SWC, six new ones after that from the Big XII, and 12 new ones from the SEC).

The UNLV runback was a fumble return that didn't involve a lot of zigs and zags but had about 20 broken tackles. The smu return was for about 150 yards, and he didn't even score.
