Not sure on those (don't have the data handy), but, for comparison's sake (and since I remembered the names offhand), Texas A&M has had 30 (12 others in the SWC, six new ones after that from the Big XII, and 12 new ones from the SEC).

Well, what's better? More, or less?

More is better if the quality/stature of opponents is increasing (i.e. A$M). Unfortunately, the quality/stature of our opponents is asymptotically approaching zero.

Common sense. So, it depends.

SMU comes to mind. Maybe TCU?

My (likely inaccurate) count gives us 1 more conference mate than SMU and 10 more than TCU.

The SMU-Rice count was the same until SMU went to the AAC. They added 8 new mates (Cincinnati, UConn, Louisville, Rutgers, USF, Temple and future members Villanova and Temple). We added 9 new mates with C-USA expansion.

The TCU-Rice count was the same until TCU left the WAC for MWC, gaining 1 new mate (BYU). The move to the Big 12 gained only 4 new mates, 3 from the old Big 6 and WVU. (Total = 12+16+1+4 = 33)

Are you counting TCU's extensive time in the Big East?

Also TCU's time in C-USA 1.0.

I did not, but are you a conference mate if you exited the conference without playing a game? Does paying exit fees count?

RE: Rice's Conference Mates: 100 Years of Athletic Affiliations
Tulane has quite a few as well:
SEC (12) - Sewanee, GaTech, Alabama, Auburn, UF, UGa, UK, LSU, Ole Miss, MSU, the other UT, Vandy
[indy for many years]
CUSA (22) - Cincy, Louisville, USF, SoMiss, UAB, Memphis, UH, ECU, Army, TCU, UCF, SMU, Tulsa, Marshall, Rice, UTEP, FAU, FIU, LaTech, MTSU, UNT, UTSA
AAC (starting next year - 3) - UConn, Temple, Navy (as of 2015)

If you add basketball affiliations from their time in the Metro, you can add in St. Louis, FSU, VaTech, USCarolina, Charlotte, and VCU; and ODU this year in CUSA. That gives them 45 as of 2015 if I counted right.

Also TCU's time in C-USA 1.0.

C-USA 1.0 adds 9 conference mates, total 42 (Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville, Marquette, St Louis, USF, UNCC, ECU, Army)

Rice still leads by 1. Houston may be the winner, they were in 6 conferences acc to Wikipedia.

My quick count gives UH a tie with 43

Short history:
[Lone Star 7]
Gulf Coast ([+1 new mate])
Midwestern (+1 new mate)
Missouri Valley (+2)
SWC (+[8])
CUSA 1&2 (+[16])
AAC (+[4])

edit: My recount +Baker'13 correction +Villanova in AAC gives a mere 39

UH wasn't in the SWC at the same time as OU, OSU, Phillips, or Southwestern, though. So only +8 there, leaving them at 39.

I get 41 for Houston counting all football-only members and nonfootball members.

Unless you count all the schools in the Big East who voted us in but later split before we started play, like Notre Dame, Georgetown, etc. Or SDSU/Boise who joined the Big East with us but changed their minds before starting play.

The new conference-mate leader is Marshall with 60. They already had 45 mates before joining C-USA:

West Virginia Conference (16)
Buckeye Athletic Association (+4)
Southern Conference (+8)
Ohio Valley Conference (+6)
Mid American Conference (+11)
C-USA (+15)

At the other end of the spectrum, is it Notre Dame?

Navy's been playing as an independent a little bit longer (1882 - plus a single game in 1879 - vs. 1887 for ND), but that will come to an end when they join the AAC in 2015.
