Congrats to the Mercer Bears on the A-Sun Championship. I think they're the better team to represent the A-Sun in the tournament. Kudos to them for weathering the dunk city (so sick of that) storm and winning in a tough environment.

This is also great because Mercer is a SoCon team as of next year. If anyone but Davidson of GSU (unlikely) wins the SoCon tournament, then the SoCon will have 2 tournament teams returning next season.

Congratulations to the Bears, and to Mercerfan. I thought Mercer was the best team in the league. I won't be surprised if they pull an upset in the NCAA tournament. Langston Hall is my favorite non-ETSU player in the league.

Wofford is blowing out GSU so a WCU vs Wofford final assures 2 NCAA tournament teams will be in the SoCon next season.

Tim Smith once told me that Davidson had the dirtiest players he's ever played against. In this was after he played in Europe for a few years.

Davidson and Belmont are both dirty. I've always wanted those two to play to we could have the whitest game played since the 1950s.

HA! I love it! Glad to see both them and Elon sitting at home and hopefully that trend will continue in their new conferences.

And if you are wondering why I have such a hatred for Davidson this quote directly from their board is why.

Quote:"High time we moved out of the trailer park of conferences. We're moving on up!"

I've always got this vibe from their fans (C of C fans too) they've always felt they were too good for the Socon. Hopefully they get a big wake up call in the A-10.

Yeah, cry me a river, Davidson. Go Catamounts. I never could stand Davidson, although I do wish they would stay in the league. The problem is they will get smoked in the A-10. C of C may want to move back as well, as their travel is outrageous with a good part of the southern half of the CAA moving out. Mercer & ETSU can help the SoCon in basketball.

I have a begrudging respect for Mercer. On the one hand, I hate them because they're in the same conference as ETSU; on the other, they've built a really fantastic mid-major program and beat Florida Gulf Coast, one of the least-likable teams in college basketball.

Mercer graduates their entire starting five, so it's tough to call them easy favorites for the SoCon next year, but they had so much depth this year - twelve players saw nine minutes or more on average - they should be expected to compete in a weaker basketball league next year.

Mercer will have some serious rebuilding next year, but looking ahead I see Mercer as a perennial contender. I'm thrilled they're coming with us to the SOCON.

Watching Bob Hoffman work the refs drives me nuts, but he's a shrewd coach who has built a solid foundation at Mercer. He casts a wide net in recruiting and is effective at piecing together transfers and freshmen.

RE: Mercer - Asun Champs
I agree. Western Carolina has a great coach. Chattanooga is normally very good. Mercer and ETSU should be in the upper half of the league consistently. VMI has been consistently competitive in the Big South the last few years. Hopefully the Greensboros and Furmans of the world can be more competitive to keep the bottom of the league from being so bad.

Even though next year's SoCon will be a little worse than this year's ASun, the move is the right thing. Folks in Johnson City can drive to every road game -- even Birmingham and Charleston. I know that college sports is 99.8% about money but the voice of the fan has to be accounted for somewhere.

RE: Mercer - Asun Champs
After 2 very frustrating years, Mercer's senior class finally broke through. And they did it the hard way.

By blowing a home game against UNF (who really had their number this year) Mercer was forced to face the other 2 teams in the ASun that gave them the toughest matchup: USCU, which beat them once and took them to overtime, and FGCU at home. FGCU had beaten them there once and were 14-1 in Fort Myers. I did not think that they would survive that draw.

Funny that UNF beats them twice, yet loses to ETSU twice. Which in turn loses to Mercer twice.

So congratulations to Mercer. Hoffman is a ruthless recruiter - always bringing in a guy or two more than he seems to have room for, and weeding them out pretty quickly and heartlessly (was it B.J. Corley who garnered academic awards as a top student athlete, with a finance major, and then didn't get his scholarship renewed for his last year of eligibility. Which was the right decision talent wise, and the wrong decision if academics and hard work mean anything). And he is an a... on the sidelines sometimes.

But he develops his players (who would have thought that Daniel Coursey would be worth much of anything as a freshman), his game plans are solid and effective, and he has repeatedly found effective replacements for potentially crippling late season injuries to key players, like those to Jeff SMith and Brandon Moore.

Despite losing all the seniors, he'll bounce back fast.

Would not be surpised one bit if they dont win 5 conf games all year next year. The Atlantic 10 is proving to be one of the better basketball conferences in the nation. I think they're in for a rude awakening.. I also hope that one day we can get invited to the A10

I was happy to see the SoCon title game is WCU v Wofford! VMI will be interesting next year, they led the country in scoring.
