RE: [split] Liberty The Political Discussion Thread
Just a few thoughts to throw in.

Humans being taller today is a function of health and nutrition improvements. After the US occupation of Japan improved their health and nutrition the belief that Asians were genetically shorter than Caucasians was proven false.

The idea that evolution is disproved because the starting species still exists demonstrates a lack of understanding of the entire theory. There are more kinds of dogs than I can think to name but they all come from Canis Lupus to become Canis Lupus Familiaris. A deliberate study of domestication and the change in animals was done over 40 years with the silver fox and after 35 generations the resulting animals were much more dog-like. There is still habitat and a way for Canis Lupus to survive so Canis Lupus Familiaris has not replaced Canus Lupus.

Consider fish. Different species feed on different foods, live in different depths, live in different climates, thrive in salt or freshwater. A more cold tolerant fish species derived from a less tolerant species won't replace the warm water fish. Salt tolerant fish feeding near the mouth of a river won't be replaced by a fresh water tolerant species that evolves from it and moves further up river.

The advanced state of life today does not disprove randomness.

You ever read NTSB accident reports? Commercial aviation is amazingly safe and if you throw out the deliberate crashes (9/11 and Egypt Air) or big events of pilot error, the safety record is amazing. Generally for a commercial airliner to crash by accident requires a long sequence of things going wrong in a certain order under certain conditions. Thousands upon thousands of hours are flown safely without everything lining up the wrong way at the wrong time but that random event does happen.

I remember a preacher in my youth preaching about how perfectly suited the earth was for life, little closer to the sun too hot, little further too cold, little larger and the higher gravity would have created problems, little smaller and insuffiicent gravity for a usable atmosphere. He used that to prove creation but it doesn't it merely proves that the life that is on earth is suited to the environment here. Life on a heavier and hotter planet would be different but still life. Life on a colder smaller planet would different as well but still life.

I happen to believe God created the universe and created life and did so within the parameters of the rules he created that scientist refer to as the laws of nature. Why create the rules then bypass them?

I've always found it interesting that the Genesis account in so many ways sounds like a Cliff Notes for what scientists say happened. I think it is also interesting that science says what we call humans evolved in the savannahs of Africa, ended up in the modern area around Iraq and CHANGED, not genetically but intellectually developing agriculture, language, and culture. Compare that to Genesis. Man was created AND THEN PLACED IN THE GARDEN which most Bible scholars tab as being in that same region where man changed. The Bible says man became aware of good and evil and was cursed to till the soil to live. To me it again reads like a simplified version of what science says happened except it includes a theological explanation. Man became aware of good and evil and it set the stage for dealing with it.

I'm very comfortable with the idea that when God revealed to man his past that it was put in a form man could understand.

I always found it confusing that it wasn't until 'Day 4' that Night and Day were separated but days 1-3 still are called 'Days'. It's why I don't believe in a literal 6 day creation.

If you want to read something interesting, Google "Dark Matter & Energy". Everytime the name dark is mentioned substitute God.

Liberty politics?

http://www.liberty.edu/news/index.cfm?PI...MID=115563

Quote:Senior U.S. Senator (Democrat) Mark Warner of Virginia visited the campus of Liberty University Wednesday, March 26, and took the opportunity to speak to about 10,000 of Liberty’s residential students in Convocation .... As he spoke to Liberty students, Warner praised them for their energy and faith, saying Washington could use more of that and that he hopes to bring that spirit with him back to the capital ...... While visiting campus, Warner repeatedly said that he wishes the U.S. government would follow a business model similar to Liberty, where the books are balanced and the budget is managed responsibly.

Quote:Christine Kennedy, the Chamber of Commerce’s executive vice president, “In considering an economic driver in this community, we couldn't think of a better place to be than Liberty University,” Kennedy said, noting that the university is adding more than 7,000 jobs to the community and is in the midst of a $500 million campus rebuilding. She pointed out that during this phase Liberty’s cash reserves will not drop below $1.2 billion.

Kennedy also said that Liberty students, faculty, and staff volunteer more than 750,000 hours of service every year.

I'm not going to derail the athletics threads but I did want to bring a question here.

For those who feel that Liberty teaching Creation science is totally anti scientific, how do you explain their soon to be open medical college? And for Liberty fans how do you reconcile the required curriculum in molecular biology etc with your views on Creation Science?

It's an obvious contradiction that demonstrates the mental gymnastics Christians have to do to rationalize living in a modern world while still adhering to a contrived spiritual ultimatum(the threat of hell). Outside of this context it would seem absolutely absurd, but since we all grow up around it it's perceived as normal.
