Status of McFerrin?
How long does McFerrin get? Does the school wait until she has the resources? 13-18 isn't good by any stretch. I don't expect to compete with UConn on a yearly basis but where is the women's program headed?

She was her conferences Coach of the Year and turned around the program at American University. She is the former GM of a WNBA team. Her credentials are pretty impressive. That being said, the question is what is holding her back at Memphis from doing what she knows how to do? Not sure.

She definitely knows how to coach. This is why I posed the question about facilities. I wonder if she's being cut some slack due to that.

The previous 4 seasons she's gone: 83-50, 3 NIT/1 WBI...sounds like this season were adapting to life in a real conference with 3 top programs in UConn, Louisville, and Rutgers.

Yeah, I get that. I hope she's given the tools she needs. Hopefully the new practice facility will help.

Didn't she have a bunch of players transfer out after last year?

She has to start getting the top players to stay home. She got Ariel yo stay. That's a start.

Jasmine Cincore should have been number 1 which I'm sure she was. There are quite a few upcoming seniors we need to get. Their are three players at mhea that would be awesome. I know she's in in Torrie. Bailey would be spectacular running the show next to Ariel. There is a 6'6 in west memphis I'd be all over.

I've wondered why the success of the men's program through the years hasn't had any coattails to the women's program. I guess the 2 worlds are too far apart. Does our women's program come across as decidedly low-rent?

RE: Status of McFerrin?
she already signed a all=conference player in Ariel Hearn last year.

added 2 all freshman players this year

compare her to others and she's doing better than you would imagine

Memphis, TN-Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn leads a trio of Memphis women’s basketball team members on the American Athletic Conference post season awards list announced Tuesday. Hearn was named a first team, all-conference honoree, while freshmen Breigha Wilder-Cochran and Mooriah Rowser were named to the all-freshman team.

Hearn currently ranks third in the American Athletic Conference with 17.5 ppg and also ranks ninth with 3.5 assists per game. The Arlington High School graduate also ranks sixth in the league in steals (with 1.9/game) and ranks fourth in both three-point field goal percentage (37.2) and three-point field goals made (2.1). She was a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman team last season and is earning her first career all-conference honor. This is the fourth straight season the women’s basketball team has had a first team all-conference honoree. Hearn follows in the footsteps of Brittany Carter (2010, 2011), Jasmine Lee (2012) and Nicole Dickson (2013).

Wilder-Cochran has appeared in 29 of Memphis’ 30 games (missing one game due to injury) and has set the Memphis freshman single season assist record with 122 assists heading in to the conference tournament. Wilder-Cochran also ranks second on the team in steals and adds 8.0 points per game. This is her first career honor from the conference.

Rowser was also named to the all-freshman team with Wilder-Cochran. The guard is working her way back from a knee injury suffered three games in to last season and has come back to rank as one of the Tigers’ top three scorers, averaging 8.2 ppg. This is the second career honor for Rowser from the American Athletic Conference as she was named the conference’s first freshman of the week at the start of the season.

Memphis is in Uncasville, Conn., and will face Houston, Friday, at 8 p.m. (ET) in the first round of the American Athletic Conference women’s basketball championships.

For whatever reason- many girls left the team- so this was going to be a pure rebuilding job- after they had been close to NCAA caliber a few seasons ago.

Next season will ratchet up expectations.

Yeah, I hopefully made it clear that I think McFerrin is a good coach and want her to be successful. I was just wondering out loud whether or not her seat now warms or does Bowen 'give her a stick to fight with' first?

I imagine Charity Savage at Bolton will deserve a look. Just a sophomore this year but has a lot of promise IMO. The few times I watched her she was already tough in the post and a good scorer but even as a post player ran the point for her team very well quite a bit. Seems like a versatile player

I hope she stays and succeeds. The new facilities will change the game. She deserves a few years with that advantage.

This is year one in a league with some historically strong programs (and THE program). We'll know in a couple of years how things are working out.
