File this under "for what it's worth . . ."

I found on the Lipscum site where they're getting (for 1 year) 6'11" 5th year graduate transfer Chad Lang from Belmont. Link:

Sounds like a good get for Lipscomb. They had a good young team but not much size.

Better be careful about your spelling, Sixties, you'll have your education questioned.

So will Belmont no longer be able to boast how they haven't had a transfer in so many years? Or does him being a 5th year and graduating exempt them from that?

Wofford signed 6'4" SG, Larry McKnight. McKnight also received offers from Elon and New Hampshire. McKnight is said to be a strong guard who can get to the rim.

The kid got his degree, Byrd did his job.

I know it's not SoCon news, but it pertains to a former rival and former ETSU coach….

Jacksonville just announced the hiring of their assistant coaches, and among the 3 new assistants was Scott Wagers. He should be able to help them own the Tampa area for mid-major talent.

It's premature to predict next season, but (very) early indicators suggest a two-team race next season between us and Wofford. We beat UTC rather handily, and they lost their best player (Z.Mason) as well as several transfers. If UTC"s the 3rd best team as this author predicts, then we should be among the league leaders if the season started today. The season starts in 6 months, of course, and recruiting can fundamentally change the complexion of a team. Mercer, for example, looks to be capitalizing quite well on their tournament success with this recruiting class.

We, of course, have no proven frontcourt. Nonetheless, talent and depth at the 1-3 positions make for a solid foundation. My rose-colored prediction is that we'll win the SOCON next year.

RE: 2014 Off-Season Discussion: player news, team analysis, SOCON news, schedule, etc.
Wofford, returning everybody from their NCAA run, is clearly the team to beat. Everybody else has holes.

Western Carolina has lost 4 of their top 5 and VMI 2 of their big 3, including 6'9" Covington.

Don't underestimate the difficulty the Bucs will face in replacing the only bigs we had in 6'7" 225 Hunter Harris, 6'8" Lukas Poderis and 6'5" 250 KGG. Interior defense and rebounding will just be a problem.

Despite their losses, I think that Mercer will surprise. This bunch knows how to win, and Bob Hoffman can coach. Ike Nwamu is an athletic 6'4" beast at guard; Darius Moten 6'6" 195 and Jibri Bryan 6'3" 180 have been around the program for years and can produce better than they've had a chance to show and Bob Hoffman has developed worse players than 6'9" T.J. Hallice into serviceable front court players. If 7'1" JUCO Fishler or 6'10" 235 freshman Nicolas Ney gives them anything, they will be a pretty well rounded team.

You've got to give Wofford a big early lead, but they are not big enough to take full advantage of our weakness inside. The only guy over 6'4" playing over 20 minutes is 6'6" 220 Lee Skinner (8.5 rebounds, 11.1 points in 31.8 minutes). Other "bigs" are 6'6" 205 Justin Gordon at 18 minutes and 6'7" 230 C.J. Neuman at 19.8 minutes. They'll still give us a hard time inside - but not likely as much as Mercer, USCU and FGCU did the last two years.

We probably don't deserve a second place until we show what can do inside. But nobody else in the SoCon looks too scary there.

I know it's only a small sample, but I still look at this example to argue for ETSU and Mercer doing well next year:

Chattanooga not only lost to Kennesaw State (at home!), but they also got blown out on the road at Northern Kentucky.

This same UTC team then went on to sweep Wofford in 2 games during the season.

Good luck spinning that into a positive light for either UTC or Wofford.

ETSU whipped UTC in the postseason too.. but I look for the Mocs to be much improved next year....

Didn't Mercer graduate like 7 seniors this year? Maybe MercerFan thought he was posting in the 2013 Off-Season Discussion thread.

He would have been much more successful had he picked Wichita State. He can't play in the SEC. He will play at UT because they simply do not have players inside, but he will be dominated by his competition.

Yes I'm well aware of that. I could remind you that Coach Hoffman and Mercer have defeated ETSU 5 times in a row spanning over the last 3 years when those players where juniors and sophomores, but I won't do that 04-cheers

Our former Lipscomb buddy Stephen Hurt will be playing for Kansas State this upcoming season.

Another one of FGCU's players is transferring to Alabama.. He chose between Alabama and UCLA...
