RE: Rice vs ODU
Matt struggled in the 9th (back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning, then saved by a diving catch in CF by Williamson), but escapes unscathed. Appeared he totally ran out of gas. Important win.

Game Ball #1: Zech Lemond (W, 2-0, 6.2 IP, 2 singles, 1 run, 0 ER, 3 BBs, 1 HBP, 10 Ks)-- is now a perfect 2-0 as a starter. Impressive outing against a quality offensive club. Had a no-hitter through the first 5 innings, and set a career high in strikeouts.

Game Ball #2: Matt Ditman (Save #2, 2.1 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 0 BBs, 3 Ks) in his first game assuming the role of both stopper (he got a 3 pitch strikeout to strand two baserunners in the Top of the 7th) and closer. Well done.

Game Ball #3: Leon Byrd (3-4, double, 3 RBIs), who has now hit well in two consecutive games, with the game-winner in the very first inning.

Honorable mention: John Williamson for his potential game-saving catch in the 9th, with two runners on and no outs.

Once again-- great pitching and defense, but a struggling offense. We got lucky tonight thanks to the early wildness of ODU's starter and a timely double by Byrd, but the offense has to get back on track, and quickly.

One down; two to go. Let's take two tomorrow! Bullpen could be a little thin, without both Lemond and Ditman (and, presume, Rutter, as well); meaning we really need Teykl, Smith, McCarthy and the Orewilers to step up...and we need our starters (Fox and McCanna/Duplantier) to go at least 6 innings each. Go Owls!

Not a very good base running decision...at all.

I gotta believe that one is on the 3B coach; not Byrd. Having said that, with a 3-run lead in the bottom of the 8th, and the bottom of the order due up (hitless on the game), I had no problem with being aggressive there with one of our fastest runners.

I'd say bottom of the order was probably the key, and that's probably a decent risk to take there.

Van Hook waved him home. With 2 out, if there's a 1 in 3 chance he'll score, send him. Held on third, you need a hit or WP to score him.

I was watching on Owl vision and you couldn't see Van Hook wave Byrd in.
Agree with the aggressive call up by 3 late in the game, but man... The catcher with the ball had time for a sandwich before Byrd got home.

The right fielder just made a heck of a nice play in cutting off the ball before it reached the fence (it looked like it was headed straight for coffin corner). Plus the kid made just an A-plus throw to the plate. Our consensus in the "C" section was that it was a good gamble, with a three run lead, bottom of the eighth, and Byrd Man running the bases.

PS. Williamson's catch was a real game saver. He had to dive feet first, glove extended to his right. If it had gotten past him, would have rolled all the way to the center field fence. Result: score would've been 4-3, with the tying run at second or third with no out.

It seems to me that Rice has been very aggressive on the basepaths all year. It might be that we need to squeeze out runs when we are not hitting all that well/

I'll have top pay more attention to VanHook's style today. When the OG was coaching 3rd, I'd often see him turn his back on the field as the runner headed towards third. I assume that was the sign to go for home.

I did like the run-and-hit early in the game. Too bad the ball was hit right at second base. Byrd would have been on third had the ball gotten thru to right.
