Change for This Weekend's ODU Series
No game Sunday. DBL Header starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Saturday and Sunday tickets both good for Saturday.

No change for Friday.

Saturday Doubleheader Slated To Begin at 10 AM; Sunday's Contest Cancelled Due To Weather

March 6, 2014

HOUSTON - In anticipation of inclement weather in the Houston area this weekend, changes have been made to the Rice baseball team's home Conference USA schedule vs. Old Dominion University on March 8-9 (Sat.-Sun.).

Rice and Old Dominion have now scheduled a Saturday double-header to begin at 10 am (Central Time). The new double-header eliminates the game that was originally scheduled for Sunday (March 9), where forecasts call for rain throughout the day. Tickets for either Saturday or Sunday will be honored all day Saturday. There is no change for Friday's series-opener where first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm at Reckling Park.

With the schedule change, fans should take note of some other related changes around the weekend games:
Saturday Gates Open: 9 am,
Tickets: Tickets for either Saturday & Sunday will be honored all day Saturday,
Saturday First Pitch time: 10 am,
`Roost' Opens: 11 am,
Fans may remain in Reckling Park between games (no clearing of the stadium),
C-USA league games are 9 innings,
Duration between games is 30 minutes.

There is a 30 percent chance of rain on Sunday (per http://www.justweather.com) and a 20 percent chance on Saturday. Maybe they should play the double header on Friday. (Note the sarcasm.)

AccuWeather says 25%...maybe they looked at weather.com, which says 60%?

RE: Change for This Weekend's ODU Series
Former Manvel star QB Shane McCarley signed last February to play football for the Monarchs. He was drafted by the Yankees as a pitcher, in spite of playing only his senior year. McCarley transferred at semester to Blinn College, and is pitching there. He's just a freshman with a mid-90s FB. But, he's short (6‘ 0") for a RHP.

RE: Change for This Weekend's ODU Series
Guys-- just a heads up-- as I'm in the NY area this week (through next Wednesday), there will be no previews until I return to Chicago.

Having said that, don't underestimate ODU; they're not a bad ball club. The Monarchs are currentl 8-4 on the young season (3-2 on the road, 1-2 vs. Top 50 opponents, but 4-1 vs. Top 51-100 clubs). Here's the schedule and results to date...
http://warrennolan.com/baseball/2014/sch...d-Dominion

Here's their roster and stat sheet covering their first 12 games...
http://www.odusports.com/SportSelect.dbm...SID=750478

http://www.odusports.com/fls/31100/pdfs/...M_ID=31100

As a team they're hitting a very respectable .300/.383/.407, and averaging 6.8 runs/game and 3 extrabase hits per game. They're also averaging 5 free passes (BBs, HBPs) and 5 strikeouts per game. Four regulars are hitting over .315, and only one is hitting below .260.

On the mound, ODU's staff has complied a solid 3.28 ERA an .267 BAA, while striking out 75 and walking just 33 in 107.0 IP. In other words, not particularly high strikeout rate, but very good control. Their 3 weekend starters (So RHP Alexander, Sr. LHP Yarbrough, Sr LHP Roberts) all have ERAs between 2.50 - 3.21, and they boast an outstander closer, Sr RHP Gero, who has already appeared in 8 of their 12 games (8 app, 1-1, 5 saves, 9.0 IP, 1.00 ERA, .182 BAA, 0 BBs, 7 Ks). Yes, you read that right-- we'll get 2 veteran left-handers throwing against us this weekend...and with Hoelscher replaced by Teykl at 3B, we have one less right-handed bat to match up against southpaw pitching.

This is not going to be easy-- what with our injuries (Stephens, Hoelscher, Rutter), with ODU's veteran southpaw pitching (their 2nd best reliever is a Freshman left-hander), and with the Monarchs coming into Reckling on a bit of a roll; having won 8 of their last 10 games. However, it's the start of conference play, and if we hope to win that 19th consecutive conference championship, it's time to put up or shut up. Time to look within and come together as a team. Time for everyone to step it up a notch or two or three. Let's get off to a strong CUSA start. Go Owls![/code]

Doomed, I tell you. Why go to the trouble to even play the games...with that many lefties, Rice may forget how to even get to Reckling...Doomed!

Just putting a left hander's glove on the mound strikes terror into our bats.03-lmfao

If the opposing pitcher brushes his tooth lefthanded, the jinx is on!

"tooth"? I thought we were playing ODU not Arkansas.

My bad. I thought they were sort of Appalachian. Obviously I don't know anything about our natural rivals in the Sunbelt 2.0. I do know they have a lot of lefty pitchers however...

RE: Change for This Weekend's ODU Series
To perhaps illustrate that geography was not a hallmark of my public school education...

A conversation held briefly this morning:

13th- ODU isn't in Texas right?

Mrs. 13th- what is a ODU?

13th- You know, that new CUSA school that Rice plays this weekend.

Mrs. 13th- no, it isn't in Texas.

13th- So it's, like, outside the loop then, right?

You're missing an opportunity as a stand-up comic. See if The Improv has an open-mike-and-insert-foot night. 03-lmfao
