Left Horrified By “Nightmare” Cadillac Commercial
That Touts American Dream, Mocks Quasi-Socialist Europe’s Lack of Work Ethic…

The Leftists don't like suggesting Americans work hard and excel while making fun of their European buddies.

There are plenty of things to celebrate about being American, but being possessed by a blind mania for working yourself into the ground, buying more stuff and mocking people in other countries just isn’t one of them.

So we wish we could say that Cadillac’s commercial for its 2014 ELR (suggested retail price: $75,000), which debuted during the Olympics, was a joke. But no, it seems to be dead serious — a completely shameless celebration of our work-hard-buy-more culture, with a blanket dismissal of “other countries” and their laziness tossed in for good measure.

The opening shot shows a middle-aged man, played by the actor Neal McDonough, looking out over his backyard pool, asking the question: “Why do we work so hard? For this? For stuff?”

As the ad continues, it becomes clear that the answer to this rhetorical question is actually a big fat YES. And it gets worse. “Other countries, they work,” he says. “They stroll home. They stop by the cafe. They take August off. Off.”

Then he reveals just what it is that makes Americans better than all those lazy, espresso-sipping foreigners.

“Why aren’t you like that?” he says. “Why aren’t we like that? Because we’re crazy, driven, hard-working believers, that’s why.”

By this point, the ad has already become little more than a parody of itself, but we had to ask: believers in what? The pursuit of “stuff.” The other reason for America’s superiority, according to Cadillac? Our unrivalled space exploration program (“We’re the only ones going back up there,” the ad boasts). Nevermind the fact that the U.S. government is now paying Russia $70 million a pop to shuttle NASA astronauts to the International Space Station.

It doesn't make me want to have a swimming pool or a Cadillac, but it is a memorable ad.

The only people who had time to attack the commercial and worry about symbolism and crap in it are people who don't work, or ought to work harder.

I like the commercial. I understand the point of hard work. I think many people just wonder whether someone who works hard can truly get ahead in life without the education and some luck.

X-Types don't count. 04-cheers

They couldn't have been worse if they were assembled by Chrysler.

Read the comments in the HuffPost piece and you'll understand why this country is in trouble. Many people no longer are willing to work hard for anything and disparage anyone who does as a fool. They expect that they should be taken care of because it's not fair that the 1% have so much.

Well put. It's sad that it's true.

Sad, but true. Leftists are ruining this country with their welfare and nobody has to work for anything beliefs.

They fail to see that the "hard working" are providing for the "hardly working". So I guess they are fools. When they wise up everyone will have nothing but at least it will be fair.

That's a niceeee Cadillac. We almost bought a Cadillac STS (?) but my head kept hitting the headliner. We settled for a Volvo 4 cyl. with turbo. Man, that think could run but wow it was expensive to fix. We settle on a little ol' Subaru with turbo and this thing can book too. Only negative is the stupid mirror it keeps drooping and I don't like the visor, too short. It'll probably be our last car, I hope.

YES! I was having BoB flashbacks (for lack of a better word) that entire time.

Also, here's some vacation data:

The highlighted comments are straight merde.

While I'm not one for exceptionalism, the commercial didn't really go to far with it. It's basically saying, "they live their lives, we live ours."

I like the fact that it mentioned hard work, but they should've thrown in the other stuff to be realistic.

Cadillac? Eww...

I would rather go for a lightly used Aston Martin (2009 V8 Vantage with about 20k miles goes for $65k-$80k, depending on where you live).

If I'm looking for a new family sedan, then I'd go for a C63 AMG or a BMW M3.

I like the message and concept for the commercial.

My GF has a Nissan Altima coupe and I HATE that little thing, my head always hits the top. I've never owned a car for that reason. I have to stick to trucks.
