HIV Cured?
Early treatment in infants effective

This is an interesting article.

What came to my mind are some of the 'conspiracy' theories regarding the virus itself and the treatment of that virus.

RE: HIV Cured?
I'd be very interested to hear about the condition of the Mississippi child that has been off the drugs for 2 years.

Thanks. Wow.

"Game changer" was the expression that came to mind reading that.

It begs the question, what is so different about the viral situation in the newborn and that of any other person? I guess, so, much like syphilis, can HIV be better controlled if treated within days of transmission?

Before we moved to Missouri in October, I was living in Mississippi. I went to church with Dr. Gay. Her and her husband had a wedding shower for my wife and I last summer. Nicest people you'll ever meet, very humble and just modest. She said on several occasions to us that while she was happy she might've cured one baby, she didn't deserve the credit.

The thing about it working on babies is that the doctors who are trying it are pediatricians and they have found success. I'm sure someone is taking the cocktail they've seen work now in two cases and are trying it on adults.

Was the treatment for the infant any different than that used in adults you think? I'd have figured they used common drugs but in different doses.

The second article you posted said they were exploring the difference between the immune systems of newborns and everyone else.

Could be the cure lies in finally attacking it from the correct angle.

I'm not sure. I know Dr. Gay and her husband were missionaries in Africa when she began doing research on HIV/AIDS. This was the first successful cocktail. It took trial and error to find the right combinations. She said herself that she's unsure if the baby is cured or if it's just dormant. Right now research says cured.

As far as the medicines, I don't know enough on the topic to even begin to elaborate on what she used. But she's worked with several anti-Aid drugs and has conferred with colleagues around the country on results they've had with all these drugs. I'm sure if we have a second child that's cured, adults taking this cocktail isn't too far off if they haven't already. I don't think it's an overnight thing either. The first child hadn't taken the cocktail in a couple of years when they came in for an exam. Matter of fact that was the first time in a couple of years the child had been back at UMC for a check up.

RE: HIV Cured?
That's interesting.

I've seen the term "functional cure" in several other articles. I wonder if this little girl is cured entirely or if she has been functionally cured. Those other articles mentioned that standard or even somewhat detailed tests don't pick up the presence of the virus but very detailed lab tests do pick it up in low levels.

That kind of brings us all around to, what do they mean by cured? Does that mean a normal life with normal sexual activity, blood transfusions, etc, or does it mean they are safe from developing AIDS as a result?

I would think the latter. It's kinda like Herpes.. You may have it and never know it. It's just dormant. However, you can probably pass it along.

There was a skit a few years back on MAD TV where they had a guy that was president and he found a cure for all the diseases in the world. He injected all the heads of all the big pharmaceutical companies with various diseases, and within a week cures were available to the public for low prices.

And balancing out for weight... Also, if you're a smoker, drinker, or drug abuser it could have an effect on how the meds work.
