Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach
According to sources close to the program, plans for Bzdelik to resign at the end of the season were made after the loss to Georgia Tech at home back in January. That decision became solidified with the home loss to FSU. Rumors are now circulating on local radio that Bz has already told the team that he will not be returning next year.

So that means the Wake Forest coaching search has already begun behind closed doors. This should be an interesting test for the new ACC and its attractiveness to coaching talent around the country.

Most expect our candidate list to look something like this.

Top Candidates
1. Gregg Marshall
2. Shaka Smart
3. Ben Howland
4. Unknown High Major Coach I (makes call to gauge interest)
5. Unknown High Major Coach II (makes call to gauge interest)

Second Rung of Candidates
6. Mike Lonergan
7. Mike White
8. Archie Miller
9. Steve Masiello
10. Tommy Amaker
11. Dave Paulsen
12. Chris Mooney
13. Russell Turner
14. Dr. Brett Reed

Kevin Stallings is a possibility. We could do worse, but he would be expensive and his style of play isn't very attractive.

Of the top list if coaches only Howland seems like he would accept the Wake job, but if you want someone I feel fits Wake's profile then I would be looking at Bobby Lutz. he deserves another shot as the head man & would bring one of the top recruiter's in the nation in Rob Moxley

Yes, but that doesn't mean he will take the job though.

We all know the argument for why Gregg Marshall will not take the Wake Forest job, but here is the argument for why it is a real possibility that he would take it.

1. Barring another higher profile program unexpectedly firing their coach or an unexpected retirement. Wake Forest will be the best job opening in the country this offseason.

2. Marshall went to high school in Cave Springs, Virginia about and hour and half drive from our campus. He was born in Greenwood, South Carolina. He still has family in the area and raising his kids so far away from the rest of his family was one of the things that made him hesitate about taking the Wichita State job in the first place.

3. He likes the idea of being an ACC coach. When he turned down NC State's offer a few years ago, he said that it was the only job that really tempted him to move and he was afraid that it might not get another shot at becoming an ACC coach. Well, Wake Forest is going to give him another shot. Will he turn down the opportunity again? It very well may be his last chance to get an ACC job in his home region of the Carolinas and Virginia. Duke and UNC likely make their hires from higher profile programs or their own coaching trees. NC State probably won't offer him again. UVA is unlikely to hire another coach in Marshall's window of opportunity for moving. That leaves VT, Clemson and Wake as his best chance. Wake Forest is clearly the best basketball job of the three.

4. Wake can significantly increase his salary, tv exposure and the level of recruit he can land.

5. Ron Wellman knows he has to make a big hire to make up for the damage done to the program and his reputation by Bzdelik.

We're not hiring Bobby Lutz.

I understand that. Marshall & Howland would top my list but you could & have done a lot worse than Lutz, he can recruit is great x & o's guy plus he is energetic & proven he can compete against higher profile schools with more resources

Marshall and Smart would probably shoot for a bigger gig-(Katz has already hinted that Marshall would be at the Top of the list for Kentucky if Calipari leaves for the NBA).

Another name is Donnie Tyndall at Southern Miss...very good coach.

Steve Masiello would be an outstanding coach. Former Pitino assistant. Potential Pitino replacement in the future.

We will most likely have already made our hire before the NBA starts plucking any college coaches this year. Similar to how we locked down our top target in football, before Texas and the other big boys started a domino effect.

Mike Lonergan is your guy. I watched him coach when he was HC at Catholic U. He's been successful wherever he's coached. Plus he's from the DC area, specifically Prince George's County, an area rich in basketball talent.

If this were a typical Wake coaching search then my money would be on Lonergan as well. But I think Wellman wants to rehabilitate his reputation as much as he can. He needs a splash hire, so he's going to make a serious play at a few of the homerun hires first.

RE: Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach
There is another rumor going round that Wellman is showing our high dollar boosters a potential candidate list with 33 names on it. Partly in an effort to drum up donations and partly because he was criticized so severely for fixating on Bz less than a week into the last search.

I don't think I believe that one.

You should make a play for Brad Stevens.

I guess it couldn't hurt to make a call to see how he likes the NBA. But with six years left on his Celtics deal, I would have to think the buy out would be a serious roadblock even if he was interested.

After beating Dook tonight, you might have to put up with Buz a little longer.
First time in 5 or 6 years that Wake has beaten Carolina, Dook and State in the same season.

We swept them in 2009. It's hard to give Bz credit for breaking a losing streak that he created himself.

All these wins will do is make our job more attractive. The new guy can step in, win 20 games and be a bubble team right out of the gate. It's not the massive rebuilding job most assume.

RE: Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach
Wake has raised $10 million dollars from our boosters for facilities since hiring Clawson in December. http://www.wakeforestsports.com/sports/m...14aaa.html

Our boosters are even more desperate to see a winner in basketball than they are in football, so don't be surprised if similar outpourings happen if Wellman makes a good basketball hire.
