Men's tennis duo wins 125th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles in LaJolla, Calif.!!!
Our statewide stormy weather washed out Friday's opening day schedule at the 125th Annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in La Jolla (just north of San Diego). But once the skies cleared and the courts drained and dried, play got started on Saturday, two of the Rice men's team advanced to the round of 32. (Click on the results tab on this page to see the scores.)

From what I could tell from the results:

> Rice's Alla & Berger are seeded 7th, had an opening round bye and defeated UNLV's Petrov & Sublette, 8-2.

> Rice's Bennett & Warren defeated USD's Addison & Fasso, 8-3, in the opening round of 128. They then advanced to the Round of 32 when Friedman & Genender withdrew due to injury.

> In the opening round, Rice's Munch & Yablon advanced when Albert & Albert withdrew. Then they lost, 8-3, to St. John's' 9th-seeded DelNunzio & Reyes (formerly from Oklahoma State & Wichita State, respectively), 8-4.

With two of Rice's doubles squads (and a couple of St. Johns's' as well) scheduled to play on Sunday, I wonder what will happen to the Owls' scheduled 2 p.m. Sunday (Pacific time) match with St. John's, which is also in La Jolla for the tourney.

Perhaps both coaches had figured that with a normal, non-rainout schedule that their players would have been knocked out by Sunday.

RE: Men's tennis in LaJolla, Calif.
Cal's Filip Bergevi (Sweden) & Mads Engsted (Denmark) defeated Rice's Tommy Bennett (England) & David Warren (Houston), 8-3, in the Round of 32.

Since there's not a peep on Riceowls.com about the Owls' participation (yep, it's a busy weekend for Rice sports), here's a link to a Cal article from yesterday about the tourney.

RE: Men's tennis in LaJolla, Calif.
I found some more info in the "draw" tab of the tourmanment page:

Rice's Gustavo Gonzalez & Assistant Coach Bojan Szumanski were seeded 8th and had a first-round bye. They're facing UC-Davis' Brett A. Bacharach & James Wade in a match that was scheduled to began at noon (Pacific time, an hour ago).

Rice's Maxwell M. Andrews & Adam C. Gustafsson defeated Cal's Nikhil Jayashankar & Wyatt H. Houghton in the first round, 8-6, and then 9th-seeded independents Jose S. Lieberman & Ruben D. Torres in the second round, also 8-6. They'll next face U. San Diego's 5th-seeded Clarke Spinosa & Filip Vittek in a match set to being at 1:30 Pacific time.

Rice's 7th seeded Srikar Alla & Leif Berger are scheduled to meet Stanford's 9th seeded Daniel Ho & Robert Stineman at 1 p.m. (Pacific time).

Owls win, 9-7!

They're scheduled to play the winner of a noon match that's not finished yet: Pepperdine's Tom Hill & Alex Giannini vs San Diego State's Milen Ianakiev & Juan Florez.

Alla & Berger beat Ho & Stineman, 8-5 ... but then fell to USC's 2nd-seeded Connor Farren & Robbie C. Bellamy, 8-6.

Andrews & Gustafsson beat Spinosa & Vittek ... and then dispatched top-seeded independents Max De Vroome & Kaes Van't Hof, 8-3. Their quarterfinal match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (Pacific time)

Gonzalez & Szumanski beat Bacharach & Wade, 9-7, and then defeated San Diego State's Milen Ianakiev & Juan Florez, 8-4. They'll soon play Addison Appleby & Benjamin B. Guthrie from William & Mary. The winner of that match will play Rice's Andrews & Gustafsson in the quarterfinals!

Would LOVE to see and all-Owls Quarterfinal match!

Gonzalez & Szumanski advance to the semis, 8-4! Go Owls!!

They'll face the winner of USC's Connor Farren & Robbie C. Bellamy vs St. John's' Gustavo Loza & Gary Kushnirovich. (Farren & Bellamy had earlier knocked ourt Rice's Alla & Berger.)

In another quarterfinal match, St. John's' Del Nunzio & Reyes lost to Cal's Bergevi & Engsted, who'd earlier beaten Rice's Bennett & Warren. (Yesterday, Del Nunzio & Reyes beat Rice's Munch & Yablon.)

Riceowls.com is still showing today dual match with St. John's, which was scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Pacific in San Diego. I wonder if the weather and/or the teams' participants' successes have caused a postponement or cancellation of this match. But, sadly, there doesn't seem to be any communication between the men's tennis and website folks, as the top story is still their 5-2 loss last Sunday to U.LaLa.

I don't see any result of the Farren-Bellamy vs Loza-Kushinrovich. It might have been called on account of the Oscars broadcast starting. (The tourney is in Southern California, after all.) Or, maybe, no lights on their courts?
