I hate to root against the guy, but we don't want Stone to do too good this year if we hope to have a shot at landing him on campus.

Well it wasn't a miracle that we won 1-0, but it will be a miracle if we try to win all our games that way. We need the hitting to come alive. The pitchers can't save us every night. Still a win over a top 20 team is always a good thing.

RE: Rice vs TCU
Zecher ends it in style-- with a strikeout to put the nail in the coffin after a 1-2-3 inning. HUGE, must have win, but we still need to find the offense. Our pitching continues to be exceptional, and our D was strong tonight, as well.

Game Ball #1: Blake Fox (W, 3-0, 6.0 IP, 5 hits, 0 runs, 2 BBs, 7 Ks), who stays undefeated for his career (now 9-0 as an Owl), and who tied his career high in innings pitched in a game, and set a new career high in strikeouts. Arguably his best game to date as an Owl. Off to a terrific start. He's really stepped it up this year.

Game Ball #2: Zech Lemond (Save #3, 3.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 BB, 1 K) gave us one scary inning, but when runners got on 2B and 3B, the next 5 batters he faced to end the game never got the ball to the infield dirt. According to Kendall's tweets, he topped out at 96 MPH and sat between 94 - 96, with an 84 MPH slider. Never used his hammer curve.

Game Ball #3: I could give this to Leon Byrd, who's lead off single in the 6th resulted in the lone run, or Michael Aquino for his gunning down the runner at home early in the game, but this one goes to JC Reeves (1-2, double, sac fly, RBI) for the game-winner.

Need the win against Tech tomorrow afternoon to reach .500 for the week, and not slip too far in the national landscape. My guess would be Jon Duplantier gets the start, but it could be Matt Ditman, as well. Let's not forget that we have the rematch at Houston on Tuesday. Somehow we have got to find a way to get the offense on track to match our pitching.

Arguably the best defensive effort of the year. Clutch relief pitching, no mistakes, and most importantly no runs allowed.

From Kendall:

Love some Zech Lemond. Absolutely filthy in the ninth inning, ending the game on beautiful 84 mph slider. @RiceOwlsBSB wins 1-0. #TCU #CUSA

Lemond dealt the final few innings, topping out at 96. Unless I missed it, didn’t even have to use that hammer curve. Sick. #mlbdraft

Good win and great defense...other high rank teams are getting beat as well this weekend but we really need to hit SOON.

Walt, we play at SHSU this coming week, not at Houston. Either way, a very tough game.

RE: Rice vs TCU
I'm guessing today Texas Tech throws their RS Jr LHP Chris Sadberry against us (2 starts, 1-0, 8.1 IP, .324 ERA, .290 BAA, 9 hits-- 0 xtrabase hits, 0 BBs, 0 HBP, 5 Ks)...and when he goes out we're likely to get a continued diet of southpaw pitching, as their bullpen has been stellar and led by a pair of left-handers: Sr closer LHP Jonny Drozd (5 app, 2 saves, 9.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, .156 BAA, 1 BB, 6 Ks) and Jr LHP Cameron Smith (5 app, 3-0, 15.1 IP, 1.17 ERA, .250 BAA, 4 BBs, 1 HBP, 3 WP, 8 Ks). All these guys have pretty good control, so I certainly hope we'll be aggressive up there and look to swing on first pitch fastballs. Also note that these guys have not padded their stats against sub-par team; in fact, they shutdown the very potent bats of Indiana opening weekend.

Offensively, they're hitting .281/.364/.390 as a team, led by by a trio of regulars hitting over .340: Eric Guitierrez (.371/.511/.457, 3 doubles, 5 RBIs, 9 BBs), Adam Kirsch (.359/.395/.564, 1 HR, 5 doubles, 9 RBIs) and Ryan Long (.344/.389/.406, 2 doubles, 5 RBIs)...however, their most dangerous hitter may be a guy who has played in only half their games so far, Tyler Neslony (.533/.611/1.133, 15 ABs, 8 hits, 2 HRs, 2 doubles/triples, 10 RBIs).

UT and TCU were both poor hitting teams; Tech is a good hitting team. This is going to be a tough matchup for the guys, but they need to step up and end the week on a strong note. Go Owls!

Also, wouldn't be surprised if The OG goes with "All Staff" in today's game, as Teykl, Smith, McCarthy, Orewiler and Rutter (if healthy) have not yet pitched this week, and Ditman and Duplantier haven't pitched since Tuesday. McDowell is also available as he only threw 2 innings on Friday. We also only have one mid-week game upcoming.

No way. Ditman will get the start Tuesday vs. SHSU, against whom he pitched pretty well last week (2 runs in 5 innings, with almost all the hits being ground balls finding holes in the infield). We've got more than enough relievers who haven't worked yet this week.

Having said that, if The OG hasn't any thoughts about moving Lemond into the Friday night ace role going forward (should Jordan be out for an extended period), I can see Ditman getting a tryout as closer....with McDowell held back for Tuesday's game against Sam.

RE: Rice vs TCU
Kendall's Minute Maid writeup of the weekend so far...

http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View...ticle=9512

Quote:Rice entered the weekend ranked No. 12 nationally, and still is viewed as the best overall team despite having a 1-1 record so far this weekend. Meanwhile, some other clubs, such as Texas, Texas Christian, Sam Houston State, Texas Tech and Houston entered the weekend, at least in some shape or form, with something to prove.

Quote:* Though Rice hasn’t overwhelmed anyone offensively the first two days of this event, this club has shown flashes of one that could do some damage at the plate as the season progresses. First baseman Skyler Ewing struggles a little bit against secondary offerings, but his approach remains good, and his defense at first base last night was impressive, showing some deceptive athleticism. Meanwhile, shortstop Leon Byrd moved from the outfield in the offseason and has been stable at his new position, while Keenan Cook, Michael Aquino and others will have good seasons at the plate … Pitching-wise, I was impressed with Rice left-handed pitcher Blake Fox. Fox will not wow anyone, but he’s a poised pitcher who pounded the strike zone last night, striking out seven and tossing six shutout frames. Fox only sat in the mid-80s, touching a few 87s on the radar gun, while 72-76 mph curveball showed to be an above-average offering … The showcase arm of the night was Rice right-hander Zech Lemond, who showed his All-American self with three shutout innings to end the game. Lemond has a deceptive windup, as we’ve mentioned many times, and his stuff was electric against the Horned Frogs. He sat 93-95 with his fastball, touching a few 96s as well. Lemond also flashed his usual nasty 83-84 slider, while his 80-81 curveball is harder this year, also sitting 83-84 and serving as a plus offering. Lemond finished the game with a strikeout of a right-handed hitter with an 84 mph curveball that as one coach told me “was simply unhittable against anyone”. Lemond always impresses me.

I am guessing along with everyone else, but I have learned that the most important game is the game you play today. Tomorrow may never come.
