I think Poland would beat Russia in a straight up military fight. Heck, the Europeans didn't even have to call 'daddy' this time (as the Russians were so toxic that the people of the Ukraine took care of things themselves).

What is the US strategic interest in Ukraine? BTW under what treaty or other obligation would the US be authorized to act?

Believed in the Kremlin that the revolution in Ukraine was done by the USA. So at least the Russians think that Obama is effective.

I don't think Obama is doing squat there. Its the opposite of Bush's doctrine. Obama says...if you want a new government, try and do it yourselves before calling for us to get involved. That way, we aren't responsible for the aftermath (we are really bad at nation building).

Yawn all you want until we are drug into a war that our downsized military is too weak to fight. Obama is saying nothing and hoping for an opportunity to claim credit after everything is over. That's the Obama doctrine. Once again, I am not advocating military action. But, this is like chess...you have play for the long game. Do you really think Vladie is stopping at the Ukraine? No. We are supposed to be the leader of the free world. Instead we are leading (no, standing by) from behind. The reason why the fall of these eastern bloc countries from the USSR was great is that it provided a buffer to the rest of Europe (our allies). When they start falling and the US is standing there silent, don't be surprised when people go looking for new allies before they're invaded (haven't we seen this movie before). But, then again, maybe Russia deep down on the inside likes us or respects us. But that spy boat in Cuba tells you just how effective they think Obama is.

We aren't going to war over the Ukraine. No need to fight anything. Russia's military is a paper tiger. They aren't going to start a nuclear war over this.

If Russia wants to try and create another unrecognized statelet in the south of the Ukraine, they will do so. But Putin will have to support that state to the tune of about 30 billion US per year. Nor will that statelet have any relations with the EU, meaning that it will stagnate.

Putin, like always, will choose the wrong choice (pride before the fall).

By the way, if Putin misbehaves further, watch for trouble with the Poles and the Lithuanians. Both just invested in an LNG facility to bring in non-Russian nat gas. They've both had it with the Russians over a long list of issues. I see the Poles and Lithuanians perhaps investigating cutting off all land access to Kaliningrad as a response to this. There could also be trouble with the Romanians, who have persons they consider nationals (or at least kinsmen) in the SW Ukraine. No one, including the US, is going to militarily stop Russia from taking areas where they hold the overwhelming support of the population. But adding this region to Russia's portfolio will not make Russia stronger or a bigger threat to anyone else. Russia ALREADY has all the military bases in the Crimea that it wants.

Putin can act, but it will cause more problems for him than he'll gain. And he'll have to spend billions that won't help him.
