One point the article made was that if B'ham is not to be the victim of "Brain Drain" or "flight of bright lights", the main instrument for its prevention is UAB and its medical center and by extension, the whole UAB university complex a an anchor for the city.

UAB is perhaps the only organized bridge that is capable of bringing the important people of the entire metro area together for a common effort at achieving anything of great significance. I don't see the B'ham Water Works as filling that need at all, but at this time is as close as an alternative gets.

Birmingham Water Works just had an internal audit and it's atrocious (no, it's way beyond atrocious). A lot of corruption is going to be exposed very soon.

RE: Birmingham metro, brain magnet
Some interesting sideways history here: While a student, I used to work in the Nephrology department in Dr. Edwin Rutsky's research lab. He was a fairly well known renal doc at the time and was very well connected in the internal med research community. He was also Jewish and played a very big role in the Jewish Community Center on Montclair Rd, and used his connections and activity for med practice/research recruiting. That was almost 20 yrs ago. Interesting to see the similarities reflected in this article... Also, very hopeful to see that UAB will always remain a brain-magnet for the b'ham metro area.
