RE: OT: Best map making software
I wouldn't be surprised if most here just use image editing software to edit pre-existing images of maps.

To use a more complex map making software like ArcMap(ArcGIS) would require some pretty extensive knowledge of the software and the ability to either create the data/layer/shape files from scratch or be able to locate them on the internet (which for realignment purposes probably do not exist).

I made this one for the AAC.

It is very low tech, but it works

Some good, free, image editing software... (Photoscape is easier to use)

GIMP
Photoscape

Get some images...

US Map Images
NCAA Logos

Open map in software, lay logo over area you want, save, then upload...

Photobucket

Alternatively, you can use this site, which requires no downloading of software...

Pixlr

Microsoft Word.

I found a map I wanted to use on google images, then copied it and pasted it onto Word. In this case, I typed in American Conference and found several prefilled maps for the conference. Then I just added text boxes and move them to the approximate location.

Once I was done, I converted it to an adobe file, which I saved as an image, and then uploaded to Photobucket.

As I said, low tech. But it gets the job done.

Ironically or maybe not ironically I'm trained on ArcGIS. Its been a while, but I'm sure I'd get back up to speed quickly. Not cheap though.

I used it a lot in school and at my first internship. It's a neat program but you're right, its pricey.

RE: OT: Best map making software
I've used Google Earth to move teams between conferences pretty easily. If anybody wants my file with all the FBS teams already mapped (and I've got most FCS teams, there may be a few recent call ups I don't have mapped yet) send me a PM with your email address and I'll send it to you. The file is on my home computer and I'm at work right now, but I'll get it to you as soon as I can.

RE: OT: Best map making software
For something as simple as plotting school locations, I've used Google Earth. Simple enough, just enter an address, plop a point, and change the colors/labels.

Here's an example I posted in the JMU board to show where JMU would fit, geographically, in the MAC, CUSA, and Sun Belt:
