The Tigers don't understand time and score!
A few weeks ago many of you posters went off on me when I criticized the Tigers for chunking up shots even though we were up by 16 points with 8 minutes to play. All of you said to me, "Don't you realize that we are better when we play fast?"

But are any of you watching Ennis of Syracuse and Van Bleet of Buggaha? Don't you see what they are doing? Every dribble they take is about winning the game.

It's all about game theory. See my post on in NTR about the guy from Jeopardy who is using the rules to win. I spotted this guy quickly and he is now a national sensation.

I actually think Pastner and Joe Jackson are smart enough to figure this out in a couple of days! It's all about winning the game! Joe Jackson could easily act like Tyler Ennis. Ennis is simply understanding the rules. If you can easily get a three point shot off, why not wait until the final five seconds of the shot clock when you are up by 10 points before you take the shot.

Every tick that comes off the clock enhances your chances for victory.

I dare you to tell Dominic he doesn't know how to tell time. If you do, I'll be impressed if you live to tell the story.

Hmmm

Chucking up early 3s is never in the game plan except when it's a pass to a set shooter in transition, when the path to the rim is blocked.

Otherwise, chucking up early 3s is never what is supposed to happen.

What happens is that one of the guards (rarely Joe) feels open and tosses up a heat check.

On the other hand, one has to be careful with slowing it down too much.

Intentionally running down the clock, and especially waiting until the end to shoot can increase the number of empty possessions.

Not every shot from a particular spot on the floor has the same percentage chance of going in. Once you get under 5 seconds on the shot clock it's like adding an extra defender. A shot has to go up soon whether its a good shot or not. Whether well defended, on the move, out of range, off balance, shot has to go off.

This time pressure also helps defensive rebounders who already have position and now know the timing.

But even before getting under 5 or even under 10, just running down the click means that either you didn't run your offense, or it was empty, not actually trying to get the best possible shot. Again, that lowers the chances of scoring, which opens up chances for the opponent.

It can also take your team out of rhythm, which can carry over to D.

Yes, walk the ball up the court, take a few extra seconds to set it up (which we do quite a bit). No, don't play too fast or loose where you lose control or take bad shots by not hitting at least the 2nd or 3rd side.(we have done this too much but it is not by design).

But the best thing is still to get a good high percentage shot, whether in half court or transition.

When you run the shot clock down, you often end up taking a horrible shot.
Run the offense and take the shot when it is there.

I still remember Cal doing the very thing that the OP suggested on multiple occasions. We often would let teams back in the game because we couldn't score in halfcourt sets as well. Until we had players who could score 1 on 1 with relative ease like Rose and CDR, we struggled to close out games.
