I think they pulled a name out of a hat for each state.

RE: Every State's Favorite Band/Artist Mapped
The guy that put this together got the data from a set of music services. For each zip code he got the most popular musicians. He then combined that to find the most popular musicians for an entire state. After that he compared the popularity of each of those top musicians for each state. The musician that was more popular in a certain state than any other state became the musician to represent that state. For example, the article states that Juicy J ranked the 47th most listened artist in Tennessee. But in other regions he ranked very low such as in New England (he ranked 664). Since this discrepancy was higher than any other artist in Tennessee, he represents Tennessee.

When asked what the map of the most popular artists would look like, here is his response:

"It would be pretty boring. All the states would have the same handful of artists: Jay-z, Drake, Macklemore, Lorde, Daft Punk.

Here's the data he used.

Didn't say. But by judging from the most listened to musicians I would say the demographics is predominantly under 30.

Ok, I just did a quick search and compared TN with TN. That should give the most listened to musicians in TN. The Beatles are not in the top 1000. Neither is Led Zeppelin nor Metallica.

I find it hard to believe that a country artist isn't # 1 in Tennessee.
