Cool Native Memphian Richard Mulrooney named new U of M men's soccer coach
Native Memphian and CBHS grad Richard Mylrooney has been named the new U of M men's soccer coach.

While playing 12 years in the MLS, he played for three MLS Cup champions and was named to the MLS All-Star team three times. He played on the US National Team, the 2002 US Gold Cup championship team and was named an alternate to the 2002 US World Cup team. (He's also my wife's cousin)

Per GoTigersGo:
"With the group of kids we have back and the great group of players we have coming in, it is only going to get better," Mulrooney said. "And with the plans to build an on-campus stadium and the support in place, I am thrilled to be the head coach at the University of Memphis and look forward to taking the program to the next level."

Good news, thanks for sharing. I used to play for Americans '77 and Kickers '78, stopped playing around the time Kickers basically became Memphis F. C., I wonder if Richard Butte and Chuck Beatty are still out there coaching somewhere. One of my childhood friends, Tommy White, played for U of M from 98-2002, something like that. Sorry, this thread is making me nastalgic.

Pretty sure my brother played for the Americans way back when.. He was on the very first Team Memphis, which ultimately turned into Memphis FC.. That team was stacked.. good times

We played a lot against each other as well against Memphis FC. I played for Mitre 77 and Darrell Waltrip Express 78 out of Franklin. I went to soccer camp at Christian Brothers University taught by Butte. Not to mention all the Olympic Development teams.

I remember getting killed 15-1 by Mitre Express in the state championship game in Johnson City one year with Kickers Orange. It was cold and rainy and muddy....and we got destroyed.

The game I was talking about was against Memphis FC in Germantown with DW 78. Yeah, that Mitre team did some damage to folks. Johnson city had a good team at one time. I was with Mitre for years but dropped down when the rules changed and Mitre 77 became Nike FC 77. Good times.

Just got word that our Tigers will be playing Arkansas (hogs) here Little Rock this Saturday. Sounds like an exhibition game. It's going to be played at the same field my kids play on. Murray Park.

My son's Memphis FC team played a lot of tournaments at Burns Park. Nice facility.

Young kids used to. My son's '90 Boys team exchanged them until they turned 11 or so.

It was a cool thing. When I go back and look at the patches it brings up a lot of memories.
