People would be surprised at just what sits unseen even at places like the Smithsonian/NASM due to money constraints for restoration or display.

A massive collection; I would love to see it someday. Closer to home, several years ago, Colonel Fairley Berman (a retired US Army intelligence officer, donated an impressive collection of weapons to the Anniston Museum of Natural History. Some of it is on display there.

I've been to the Anniston Army Depot years ago & helped sort/prep bunches of returned lend lease Garands, M1 carbines etc that they end up selling through the CMP program. I came across a few really collectable ones that I wish I could've gotten but alas not meant to be

Yep. Those are all gone too. About all that's left are rebuilds.

My favorite I had was an Irish contract Enfield I got just out of the wrapper & for a lot less than what you'd pay for a Korean war mixmaster rebuild. Due to my bad back/vision I gave up high power shooting along w/ all my reloading stuff & guns but at least they went into hands that cared for them rather than the smelter.

West End HS ROTC had 1903 vintage .308 rifles for parade use. The rifle team used .22 short rifles for competition until switching over to air rifles for the last several years. We had a standard rifle range in the school's basement for competitive shooting from all 3 standard positions. They let me shoot for score a few times during the 1970s.
