Really?

I think the kid knew damn well this would happen and made a calculated move to diffuse it. Get all the wailing about it out of the way before he sets foot on a field.

Won't happen of course, because it'll be a circus wherever he lands, but I'm just not sure he had any better options.

Waiting until the draft was over, at least, would have put all talks away about him doing it simply for stock. I understand what you're saying but I I think this could have been put off. How long did Obama scoff at America for wanting to see his BC? Four years and some?

You really don't think it would have come up before the draft, as much as teams try to get into a kid's head before the draft?

And Obama's birth certificate is immaterial to this conversation.

Obama is a public figure who kept delaying one certain question, it's not immaterial to this. He dealt with the pressure just fine by scoffing, Sam could have done the same.

It's a straw man argument that doesn't have a damn thing to do with the price of eggs in China.

Alrighty then.

He definitely should have put this thing off. At least if he waited, he would have the support of guys in the locker room that knew him and befriended him. But, if I am a guy in that locker room getting questions about this dude being gay everyday and I don't know him (maybe don't like him), I really could do without him on my team.

That's exactly what Jonathan Vilma was saying about him... What if we're all in the showers and you know he likes other dudes and you catch him accidentally looking down at you, you're GONNA get pissed.

Vilma nailed it just right.

Mizzou seemed to find a way to make it work. 18-21 year old kids. I would hope professionals could manage.

He told them after 3 years and never went public with it until after his last season. The locker room never had to answer questions about this during the season. After the season, people knew him outside of being gay and befriended him. So, they are more than happy to put a good spin on things. When you get to the pros and become that big of a distraction and guy don't know you, you aren't going to make it in that locker room. Guys don't like answering 21 questions about a dude they don't know doing something they disagree with in the first place.

Exactly. He could have avoided all of this. IF he really wanted to.

True, but my point was that the media circus was going to happen either way. I don't believe for a second that it would have stayed under wraps until after the draft.

Meantime, guys who knew he was gay shared a locker room with him and it wasn't a problem.

After the first regular season game, people will forget all about this whether he's starting or cut.

I wonder what would happen if someone got pissed and caught in the moment and said homo n*gger in his direction... Will it be 15 yards and a fine?

I've said from the beginning either he can play or he can't.

There will be people with agendas both pro and con watching him closely, though.

Like HoD said, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Well, even Sports Illustrated won't put him on the cover every week (I can't believe I used to subscribe to that!). But as a media story, I don't think this will all go away quite that fast.

This... It will be discussed at least once in nearly every game or every other game the first year, IF he plays. The simple fact that the NFL will expect players to walk on eggshells around him will mean more controversy.
