Response to Blazer Booster Letter
I sent this earlier today. Some will agree with me and some will disagree that I am not supporting the student athlete. I will support the student athlete once a UAB Athletic Capital Campaign has started.

Brad,

Got your letter over the weekend. I am going to hold off for now on supporting the Blazer Boosters program due to the fact that presently I want my money going to an "Athletic" capital campaign program. Any word on one yet? Have heard of one coming for almost 5 months. Sounding like empty promises.

Best!

Growth of yearly, sustained donations by a base of boosters is the best way to judge the health and support of a program. Capital campaigns generate one-time donations above and beyond annual giving.

To cut your annual giving to support a one-time capital campaign is not a responsible way to support our program, in my opinion.

Of course, UAB's budget is ridiculously high compared to the rest of C-USA and we have no facility debt, so we could definitely save money in other places if our AD really wanted to do so.

I have not seen the UAB Athletic budget that you have seen nor that of other C-USA schools (comparing "apples to apples", so to speak) so I ask how far out of line do you see them to be? While not building anything for FB yet, we have built new facilities for other sports to great effect on those programs. What money do you suggest saving in what "other places"?

I intend to reup my Blazer Club premium for football so that we can use the elevator to get to our seats.

UAB has an $18 M dollar budget deficit. Finance 101.

You are asking the athletic program to start a capital campaign. Pretend you are a business! Your income to debt ratio is 64%. The parent company is covering your debt every year. You approach the parent company and say - we want to create a side fund capital campaign which will inevitably reduce our current 36% income increasing our debt even further.

Yah, uh huh! Right...
