Think how different things would be if the Big East had signed the contract with ESPN instead of holding out.

You can thank the Pitt chancellor for that one. ESPN had Pitt already lined up to head to the ACC so he was not interested in signing the deal (the Panthers were in the ACC three months later).

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I will always believe he knew what cards were in the deck before his hand was dealt. It's history now but there was certainly at least the appearance of impropriety.

Outstanding!

Screw college football for destroying the landscape of college sports. It's a joke how many longtime rivalries have ended in order to appease an overrated, overhyped product that for years has chosen to end their season with glorified exhibitions games surrounded by a parade.

I know the show last night blamed it on football, but from my point of view the real issue was East Coast Elitism. Simply put Syracuse, Pitt, Georgetown and a few others thought they were too cool for the likes of WVU and Cincinnati and wanted to hang out with Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, etc.

No conference can survive with a house divided. The BB only schools should have been split off before members start bolting.

A FB/BB conference could have been:

Miami
VT
Pitt
WVU
UConn
Syracuse
BC
Penn State
UC
UL
USF
Rutgers

That would be a good all sports conference. Obviously as a UC alum/fan I would love it. A few reasons why it would never had happened:

Penn State- Even if Penn State would have joined the Big East in 1982 when it came up to a vote, they would have eventually left when the B1G offer came up later.

Miami- The Hurricanes always wanted out of the Big East. Geography was a major hurdle. The Canes wanted to play in a league wiith at least a few schools in their neck of the woods-- FSU, Georgia Tech and Clemson. If they would stick around they would never let USF into the league.

So Miami would have always bolted from the Big East and in turn would have taken Virginia Tech and BC with them. Virginia Tech always wanted to reunite with their former Southern Conference brethern (the core group of the ACC).

Your list also excludes Temple. Odds are had the Big East football teams split with basketball they would have taken Temple with them and added them for all sports. Villanova was the reason why Temple was never added as an all sports member and Nova led the charge to get the Owls booted later on.

Basically we would be right back to where we are.

Watched it last night on the dvr. Color me unimpressed. The first 1 hour and 45 minutes covered the initial 6 years of the conference with a lot of shots of Boeheim in those silly Elton John glasses pitching a fit and Patrick Ewing flaring his nostrils while he clubbed and choked opposing players. The remaining almost 30 years of the league was wrapped up in 15 minutes as "football then killed everything, The End".
