Actually 2013 attendance is up from the average of the 2010-2013 seasons.

Would it not be possible for some schools in Metro areas to utilize arenas and some schools remove a few seats behind the goal post to extend the floor when playing football?

To your first point, that is no different a task than the Arena football league faces, where it is a new sport to all of them. However the bigger issue is for most, people who play arena football are the ones whose (regular) football career is over. I am not sure how strong the talent pool would be for guys out of high school who think they might make it to the NFL, but the lack of experience is probably not an issue.

Most arenas, near I say a huge majority, are actually built around a hockey rink. They may not have the equipment, or set up for hockey, but nearly every one is built around the bigger hockey/arena football/etc set up, so they can hold more events.

I can take it one step further. I think indoor soccer, which is played on essentially the same size field, is something that should be considered. It is actually fun to watch (coming from someone who hates soccer), and would probably be rather inexpensive. Heck a women's league would probably offset arena football for Title IX issues.

Indoor soccer is a much faster and entertaining sport, played both when I was younger, indoor is a winter time thing up here to stay in shape during off season.

When I lived in Baltimore, the Baltimore Blast won three MLIS championships in a row. Used to go to games. It was soccer played like basketball

The sad thing is this would probably be a revenue-neutral sport on its own. But it would have to provide enough revenue for TWO sports in order to be truly revenue-neutral. The other sport would have to be a woman's sport, which would probably require another brand new, expensive facility.

I'd like the University of DETROIT more if they had arena football.

The following schools could make a decent conference. UNC-Greensboro, College of Charleston, UNC-Wilmington, VCU, UNC-AShville, George Mason, George Washington, Loyola University Maryland, & American University. (PAAC=Premier Arena Athletic Conference).

Can someone suggest regional conferences in other parts of the country?

Detroit, Butler, DePaul, Cleveland State, Xavier, Marquette, Oakland, UL-Chicago.

Arena football would make sense, but at a lot of schools, there's a premium for court space. I don't know when you would play the games. You'd have to play them around weekends. Saturdays are out, probably Sundays, and Friday nights are dominated by high school football in most places.

CofC would probably do well with the sport, but you have to schedule around volleyball.

I do think the sport has potential. All you need is about 25-30 players, a field like the Arena Football League field, and it may work. I remember the AF2 days in the early 2000s and Charleston with 3 years out of 4 with losing records still drew 4K a game. The team in Greenville averaged over 10K a game for minor league indoor football in 2000. It expanded too quickly though.

Something else to consider. Arena football is often played at a different time than regular football (to draw fans). I point this out because for better or worse, you would likely have a lot of big colleges wanting to field arena teams to allow their football players to be "two sport" stars, which essentially would allow for year round practice. But I don't know if that helps or hurts.

I also believe there's a small arena in Park City (just north of Wichita) that is home to some level of arena football team. It used to be anyway. And that would probably make more sense playing in a 6k or so seat arena compared to 15k.

This is fun to think about. When Wichita was part of AFL2 I used to go to a lot of the games. It's a fun, fast paced game with lots of action and the Stealth were a lot of fun to watch. So was the Bomb Squad
