Hampline groundbreaking
Quote:Groundbreaking is set Feb. 24 for first leg of Hampline bike trail

Memphis, TN — Ground will be broken at noon Monday, February 24, on the first portion of the Hampline, the nearly two-mile, two-way bike trail connecting the Shelby Farms Greenline with Overton Park trails and other bike paths on city streets west to the river.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. will participate in the ceremony to take place on green space between Broad Avenue at Hollywood Street and the new bicycle plaza and entrance to Overton Park. The first leg of the Hampline will run down the greenway and will cost $80,000. The initial leg is funded by FedEx. Wagner General Contractors, contractor for the Overton Park Bike Plaza, is the builder.

A total of $3.6 million has been raised for the entire project, including a final $78,000 through crowd funding late in 2013. Other funding includes $2.3 million from the City of Memphis via a federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality transportation grant, $839,000 in other local and national grants, and $383,000 from local foundations, corporations and other private donors, including the Hyde Faminly Foundation.

The Hampline will be a two-direction protected cycle track separated from other street traffic by a median. It connects to the western end of the Greenline, goes north on Tillman to Broad, then west to Overton Park.

The remaining sections of the Hampline are scheduled for construction in late summer and fall of this year. The project will include upgraded traffic signals with countdown timers for safety at East Parkway and for crossing Sam Cooper Blvd. at Tillman. Public art will be installed to enliven the Hampline.

The cycle track project is the result of a collaboration among the Historic Broad Ave. Arts Alliance, Livable Memphis, the Binghampton Development Corporation and the City of Memphis. The Hampline will connect many miles of cycling trails in Memphis and Shelby County, and will be one of the few two-way bikeways in this country.

I really enjoy the Greenline, though I have never taken it to Tillman, which is a dicey area. Interesting that the extension will go north on Tillman to Broad then to Overton Park.

If you go during the day it isn't that sketchy. Mostly just people minding their own business. Night time when the greenline is supposed to be closed is a different situation.

Local lawyer Bill Haltom has been robbed twice near Tillman. Both times a gun was pointed in his face IIRC.

Yup. And I sometimes come down Tillman from Sam Cooper. It's not the best neigborhood (based on crime stats) and it will be interesting to see how much people use that area because the connection could really link two important areas of running/bike traffic.

What time of day was it? Sometimes you have to use your best judgement on things like this.

It was actually the V&E Greenline, which is very secluded in some parts.

“I guess lightning has struck twice,” attorney Bill Haltom said Monday while recuperating from a broken jaw from an attack Sunday while running in Overton Park.

It was the second attack for Haltom, who was robbed at gunpoint two weeks ago while running on the V & E Greenline in the Vollintine-Evergreen area.

In both attacks, robbers took his iPhones. The robberies were among eight holdups and thefts in close proximity to Overton Park in the last three weeks. Each is under investigation by a police task force unit, said police spokeswoman Sgt. Alyssa Macon-Moore. She said there have been three arrests in those eight cases, each involving juveniles...

Why I don't want it running down my Humes Heights street right in front of my house, as was proposed. I'm not worried about the runners, just the people in Red Oaks who do not have good intentions and prey off of this area already.

I used to live near Humes Heights off Picardy Place. I miss the neighborhood but not the random car break ins.

I'm not your typical Memphis scaredy cat. I live in the city, I work in the city, I'll go just about anywhere during the day, and I'll go most places at night.

However, I must admit that the Greenline worries me somewhat. It seems like the prefect place to ambush somebody.

Yeah, I personally wouldn't go from Greenline to Hampline by myself, but I've seen enough bikers on Saturdays & Sundays in that area that I would feel comfortable if someone were with me.

You should see what uses it at night, and it ain't to jog. I personally would not want my house backing up to it.

A thoroughfare through a neighborhood, but out of sight, like a railroad track or an alley, are always potential crime conduits. When I lived in Central Gardens, all kinds of criminals would roam the alleys and everything from burglary to home invasions occurred randomly. Living two blocks from a very overgrown railroad, I hear the stories of houses next to the rr being broken into 2 and 3 times in a row.

I love biking paths and greenlines where people can run and walk and jog, so please don't get me wrong. I have hiked the Grand Canyon myself. But many of the people using the Greenline are urbanites from East Shelby County and young professionals from other places who really have no idea of our unique Midtown "challenges", and sometimes no idea of what really is on either side of the Greenline. Google the crime statistics of the Tillman area. Look at an aerial map.

I used to live near Humes Heights off Picardy Place. I miss the neighborhood but not the random car break ins.

When I eventually move, I will miss the couple of home invasions I have had, the two car break-in's, the car theft, the two cars hit by drunks, the experience of having a criminal try to open my daughter's car door while she sat in it in our driveway, the stolen ladder, the memory of my elderly nextdoor neighbor being knocked down and robbed in her driveway, the guy who was determined to get in the home of my elderly neighbor, the fun of seeing two kids take one of my children's bikes as several kids played in my front yard, the two occasions dead bodies were found in cars parked at the end of my street at Lombardy, the guy who wandered out of my back yard one day when I returned home from the Liberty Bowl, and oh, yeah, the person who knocked on my door recently at 4:00 a.m. whom my dog scared away. I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

Yes, I have had alarm systems and 4 dogs for protection and I am very careful. Stuff still happens around here.

I live next to Chickasaw Gardens.

The random knocks on the door late at night "looking for work" were interesting to say the least.

Like I said above just use your head when riding the Greenline and avoid it at night. I know people that commute in to work that way early in the morning when it's still late and have had no issues.

I'm looking forward to riding my bike too. While I do own a Springfield XD-9, I don't think it prudent to wear it while riding. Fortunately I still maintain my rugby physique (albeit with a little more fat). So I'm probably a second option for would be robbers who don't have a gun themselves. Maybe if I'm moving fast enough that could be a deterrent.

Neil, there are some bike clubs here who ride daily. I see a large group in my neighborhood all the time. You might enjoy one of those.

I used to ride my bike all over downtown, esp. the south end where there are plenty of huge open areas. I rode with others and I was going so fast, I figured they could never catch up with me! Riding along the river front is quite a rush.
