I will tell you when I lived on campus and then lived just off campus in a house the police presence was reassuring. Then again, it could seem the opposite. My buddies and I used to frequent a bar called Cogans on 38th St. The Norfolk Cops used to entrap students (and others) and shake them down outside the bar. Actually one time the Norfolk Police Vice Squad was in the bar watching the Red Hot Chili Peppers because they were known (back in the 80's) for playing in nothing but their socks......and they were not wearing them on their feet (if you understand my drift). So I was embarrassed when a couple of my friends were in town from Radford and another from W&M when they were shaken down by the cops for just standing on the street. My friends were doing nothing, yet the cops took law enforcement as lets set an example so others won't get out of hand.

Today, as a father, my attitude is different. For example, an old friend of mine runs one of the watering holes (the delis) in Williamsburg. That sits across from W&M's Zable stadium. And this is Williamsburg mind you. He told me that fights and violent crime dropped BIG TIME with the police standing on the street and in squad cars right across from his establishment.

My point is, the cops know where the parties occur off-campus (like what streets they are on) and they know which clubs have the action going on. The presence of friendly police that don't provoke problems, and don't let the public get victimized should be encouraged. I view police presence as a deterrent. It just takes a mutual respect from both sides to understand the police are there to help......not harass.

BTW, in case anyone is interested the funeral for Paul Johnson is tomorrow:

It probably helped when the campus police station was at the corner of 49th and Hampton. Isn't it in Webb Center now? I may be wrong on that, but just being that far off the main drag through campus could really affect the visibility of the police in that area.

I think it's on Monarch Way across from the bookstore.

Local news here in Richmond stated that they [Police] were waiting to secure positive identification through a lineup before releasing Grimm's picture.
