RE: on the coaches show.....
Somebody help me understand.

They have seven players

AND

They are in foul trouble.

Why are we not pushing the pace with 3 minutes to go?

Every team has good players or they wouldn't be playing D1 basketball.

Honestly, after 10,300 posts, you obviously know Pastner isn't going to give a real interview. WHO CARES??

Did you just watch the game Mr. 10,000?

Surely you saw what just happened. Do you need Josh to tell you what just happened?

The played inspired and we played to win, which we did. See you Thursday.

The box score says we played seven

You realize we only played 7 guys, too, right? Not that I'm defending tonight's performance, only that we didn't play any deeper than they were.

What I'm telling you is, with 3 minutes to go, they were gassed,

AND

They had 2 or 3 guys with 4 fouls.

And if we only played 7 guys, that is a very stupid move on the coach's part.

Seriously, tell me he is trying to create a "tight-game" scenario. I might not agree with it, but at least it is a reason. I get the feeling this guy is flying by the seat of his pants. He's got some of the best talent in the country, and we are dicking around, walking it up the court with a precarious 2 point lead with 2 to play, and we are at an advantage depth-wise.

Since you don't understand my point, I'm not going to debate you. I didn't say ANY of the things you are arguing about. My only point is that if THEY were gassed near the end of the game, it's logical that we were, too, since we only played 7.

As I said, I'm not defending the decision to play 7, or anything else, just pointing it out. It's math, and unless for some illogical reason, we played 7 and were NOT gassed, then it was no advantage.

The problem with this point of view is that it seems to lead to the stance that "thus the Tigers should simply walk all over everyone else", ignoring the fact that other teams have skilled BB players as well. Plus the fact that it tends to over-rate our guys.

How many games have you watched this year where you thought "Man, I wish we had that guy!", or "I wish ______ (Tiger) played like that", i.e. rebounding, 3 pt shooting, etc.?

Back in pitiful ol' derided C-USA, we would have loved to have had DeAndre Kane, the guy at Tulane, one or two of the Memphians at Texas-El Paso, etc. A repeated desire this year is for a dead eye 3 pt shooter, ala Temple's Pepper, UConn's Napier, et al. Also a bruiser forward like 2 or 3 Cincy players, the guy at Central Florida and several others in the 'mercan. We would also love to have a tall 3 who could score, like the guy last night who went off on us, plus several others in the 'mercan. So the stance that we simply out-talent everyone, especially experienced talent, is just wrong.

"But, but, but . . . we have the #3 recruiting class!" Yeah, and ummmm, they're all freshmen, like recruits tend to be.

I totally agree, and this is true for most high major teams. We need the talent CJP brings in to be competative, but it guarantees no easy victories.

I don't get the whole argument that we are the most talented team around. We don't have any players likely to star in the nba! We have a good foundation team, the kind that if you sprinkle one or two nba level players in, it is a final four team.

We also are small on the perimeter. We really only have Geron who can intimidate opposing guards, and when we face a team that has more than 1 great shooting guard, such as Napier/Boatright at uconn or Pepper/Cummings/DeCosey at temple, we are going to give up a lot of points on the perimeter.

It doesn't matter. That goes to my argument. That is 2 minutes that one of our starters didn't have to play, and got rest. Temple didn't have that luxury.

Pastner flies by the seat of his pants, no argument. This chump has stumbled and staggered to pathetic 76% winning percentage in his 4.5 years. Plus he doesn't curse, is far too positive with his clapping, uses placards during games, and is a poor interview.

Damn, what a horrendous loser of a coach MEMPHIS is stuck with.

21 - 6.

On to Houston.

You’ll get no disagreement from me. I said early on we should attempt to run some of these team’s tongues out and blow them out down the stretch. Before the season started Josh said he wanted to run & press much more this season.

My guess is Josh thought we would have enough runaways that our new guys could easily get decent PT. Didn’t happen as planned so he plays the 7 he trusts.

RE: on the coaches show.....
He doesn't just play seven. He's played King and Iverson more lately, was playing Dom more until he had to make him eat soap for having a potty mouth; he's even had Wilson playing mopup minutes with the walkons a couple of times.

On the surface, pressing because of depth and a bunch of senior guards sounds good. It sounded good to me, but when you press, the other team has an advantage if they break it. Then you have to be able to defend outnumbered and also to score on the other end just to keep up. Not only did we struggle with our defense early on, we also couldn't shoot the ball. That's what happened with OK State#1. We were exposed. At that point in time, we couldn't press good teams and win. I'm still not sure we could press good teams and win.

We can and do press bad teams and win, particularly when they only have two guys on the bench. When Josh called a timeout after Temple's 11-0 run put them ahead, he went exclusively inside on every play and pressed after a made basket. I think we scored on six out of the next eight plays and forced a turnover, and even though they shot lights out, we still won. The press was part of it.
