The Battle for Sixth Place
Today's win was very big for us in that we were able to jump Charlotte and get closer to our ceiling for this year, the 6-seed. In addition, La Tech beat Old Dominion, placing us only 1 game out of sixth place and owning the head-to-head tiebreaker should it become a factor.
The race for 6th with games remaining:
ODU 7-6 (vs Marshall, @Charlotte, vs ECU)
Tulane 7-6 (vs FAU, @FIU, vs USM)
UAB 6-7 (@Rice, vs La Tech, vs MT)
Charlotte 5-8 (@ECU, vs ODU, @Marshall)
North Texas 5-8 (@UTSA, vs UTEP, vs Tulsa)
FAU 5-8 (@Tulane, vs USM, vs FIU)
A 2-1 finish for the Blazers will likely clinch a Top 9 finish, giving us one less game to play. ODU controls its own destiny here and has a manageable schedule, while the Blazers still must face two Top 5 teams.

Aside from FTs, this is as confident I've seen our team play since December. We're healthy and playing deeper into our roster. I really like our chances to win these next 3.

This is all very true. The FT's will eventually bite us in the ass though if we keep it up. It was also our first time winning 2 road games in a row this season. One bad stretch really ruined our season. If we hadn't lost to 4 teams below us in the standings, plus Tulane, we'd probably be in the conversation for an at large at this point. Hopefully we continue to play hard and find ways to win these last 3.

I agree with you guys. I like how many guys are getting minutes right now. Even Madison is making a contribution in his minutes. I REALLY like watts. Since this team seems to lack confidence, maybe winning these two tough games on the road will put us over the hump. Make our damn free throws and neither of those game would've even been close. Go blazers.

With the subject line this could have been about our football divisional race the past several years

I got moved to the smack board the last time I made a football reference in another sport thread.

I don't think we have been close enough to battle for 6th place in Football in years.

I said divisional. As in the east which consists of 6 teams. Hence the reference

Because the center of UAB athletics SHOULD be football. That's the sport with potential to actually make money.

RE: The Battle for Sixth Place
Let's bring us back full circle...
I know folks are upset about our WTF streak in the first part of February, but truthfully, the OOC schedule had us dead to rights concerning an at-large.
Exhibit A:
If we hadn't lost to ECU, F_U, or Tulane, we'd currently be on a 9-game winning streak, tied for 2nd in CUSA at 10-3, and our tournament resume would look like this:
D1 record: 19-6
RPI: 69
SOS: 165
Top 50: 3-1
Top 100: 3-4
WTF losses: 2 (Temple, North Texas)
An at-large would've been in play, but we would be nowhere near the positioning we had, even in 2011 when we were a First Four team.
Even finishing on a 12-game winning streak would only yield an RPI of 57 going into El Paso. Next year's schedule should be much more conducive to building a better tournament resume, but we gotta win the big ones and avoid the WTFs.

In addition, at the end of the regular season, we will have only played 9 Top 100 teams. We played 16 in the regular season of 2010-11.
