I guess the measure of depth would hinge upon players 8-13.

I assume (ranking by talent) the 2008 team's 8-13 would have been Kemp, Robinson, Niles, Andre Allen, Hashim Bailey and Chance.

This year's team's 8-13 would be Iverson, Pellom, Woodson, Damien and Markel/Pookie.

Seems plausible.

You really want to compare the bench warmers to measure team depth? Come on. You just included two guys who haven't played a second this season. It kinda gets silly at that point.

I'm not even sure what the "debate" is at this point?

Bottom line is what would you do if you were Tom Bowen? Would you fire Pastner? I'm guessing that answer is no.

If your point is that you are not convinced that Pastner can "get it done" then I agree with you. I'm not convinced either. However, I still think that he can and he still deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I don't know what to say amigo. I didn't create that discussion back in August. You asked me about depth, and by my best estimation, depth is measured by how much one has at the back of the bench.

Again, (as I qualified earlier) that question was posed before the season began, so the idea that some guys now aren't playing is of no matter. Again, this wasn't my burden to bear.

Somehow the thread (through AAA I guess) moved from the goofy interview topic (I didn't start the post and note even Transitt agrees JP's media shtick needs work) to other stuff, including this "idea" that Pastner should go.

I tried to allay those arguments in my first post, noting the successes that Josh has accumulated and noting the few things needed to round out his coaching accomplishments. I even went as far to state that these were nitpicking points, which was a GOOD thing---meaning if one has gotten to the point of nitpicking then that means the big stuff has been accomplished.

3601, I recall a thread you started back in the day about Cal needing to play zone. I don't think it meant you hated Cal, wanted him fired or anything of the sort. (http://csnbbs.com/thread-163938.html).

Here is one of your quotes directed at someone who branded you a hater for daring to second guess Cal: "Perfect example of how you can't try to make innoculous constructive criticism without being considered a Tiger hater by some. ."

But, who cares what I actually write. It ruins some people's (not aimed at you 3601) agendas if they actually pay attention to words on the screen.

That's why I asked for clarification. Often times you and I agree, but every once in a while we don't. I'm still certain regarding this.

Especially when the other team is extremely well coached and has good players.

He kicked that up a notch last night. He told Wolo every team in the country is well coached and has great players.

Well there technically is truth to that.

How many basketball coaches are there in the the U.S. alone?

Hundreds of thousands.

How many get to coach Div 1 college basketball?

360 or so.

How many basketball players are there in the world?

Millions

How many are good enough or get to play Div 1 basketball?

5400-5500?

There you go!

Thanks. Interesting stats. Are you saying that out of those potential potential 5,500 Div 1 players, Memphis' starting 5 should be proud to represent 1% of that potential Div 1 crowd?

Or you can ask why the hell he left Shaq in after he picked up foul #3 with 14:55 to go in the game, subbing Chris in for Joe instead, only to see Shaq pick up number four 113 seconds later.

I guess only "bad" fans can wonder about that, beause "good" fans never doubt the almighty coach (whomever it is...In ____ We Trust).

Fascinating how the mind sees what it wants to see and stands ready to form it's own false conclusions.

Your question was spot on and one I also feel deserved an answer by Pastner. But your last statement voided any perceived sincerity behind that question. I have no idea what a "good" or "bad" fan is. I just see fans that are passionate and have differing view points. Thank God Memphis has a passionate fan base that cares about our program.

Good fans genuinely want answers to questionable coaching moves, moves that didn't work out, why we played this defense or that at a certain point in the game, why our kids were/were not ready to play, etc. They discuss and criticize/applaud as the situation warrants, and are always happy when the team wins.

Kirk was a great interview; Finch, Cal and Pastner not good at all. It only really mildly bugged me for 2 seconds if we happened to be losing right at that time.

I want answers why my Tigers were not ready to play against neither Rutgers nor Temple this week, but I am thrilled we walked away with 2 Ws. March is looming near and I saw a completely undisciplined team twice this week, but I guess I'm merely one of those "good" fans that would never doubt the almighty coach. Pastner better start explaining last week's lollygagging soon or correct it soon enough to explain it in a no BS response.

On to Houston.

RE: CJP getting ripped this morning [merged]
The Tigers were ready to play. It should be obvious to anyone by now that their is an issue you with floor leadership. Too many chefs spoil the stew. Josh should have said two years ago Joe Jackson is my man. Yes he makes the occasional bumble but I'll put his overall game up against almost any Tiger PG in history. Joe is lacking some in confidence and Pastner could have given it to him. I'll always remember EPs knee pad Confidence is the key. Seems to me he had a pretty good college and NBA career. Bringing in Dixon is a huge plus but it has thrown off that leadership role. Dixon is a bad man for sure. Crawford is still losing focus at times as well and it shows up in silly passes and quick shots that cost us momentum. Geron Johnson is a beast that come tournament time is going to shock this nation if the officials don't hamper him with cheap fouls. He is a close to Derrick Rose as we have seen. We have the bigs inside to get it done and they are focused. Its our guard play that seems to be confused as to who is supposed to do what. IMO Dixon needs to start over Crawford, Memphis native or not. Dixon is much more intense and focused every game. Crawford does play defense, but offensively sometimes I just want to ask him where his head is. These players are smarter than they have shown and they are going to have to bring it together. Oh, and focus on your FTs..Josh cant hit them. Up and over the front of the rim, its nothing magical, focus.

You guys bashing CJP are way off base. Maybe he should have garnered a tech in OT at UConn when it was over just to make a statement, but this is about style points, its about winning. We played our hearts out up there and got shafted.

My team:

Joe Jackson
Michael Dixon
Geron Johnson
Austin Nichols
Shaq Goodwin

Oh and Nick King needs to see the floor more, the kid hustles his tail off and gets us boards.

We are lucky to have Coach Pastner, we lose him and some of you will see when we end up with some washed up has been in here. Let the man do his thing, I doubt there are 5 better young coaches in all of college basketball right now, and he is doing it the right way. We will get there.

Not sure why you're mad at me, I pretty much described you in my answer as a good fan. We played like crap, I don't know why our focus seems to drift in and out like DirectTV on a stormy night, but it does. Sometimes we do this against really good teams and get smashed, see UConn I, Cincy, etc. Sometimes we focus and beat really good teams, see OkieSt. II and UL. I wish I knew why.

However, when you ask that question you invite the 'Pastner can do no right' crowd to pile on blaming him for everything from this horrid winter we're having to the price of gas.

Honestly, what was Josh supposed to say about the Rutgers game? The truth was that Rutgers is terrible. Louisville beat them by 50! We could pretty much do whatever we wanted in that game.

So Josh did what was best - complimented Eddie Jordan for his success in the NBA... What else was he supposed to say.

You don't HAVE to say anything about the other team after a game. Sure, before a game (if asked) you have to provide the obligatory lip service. After a game, you just talk about your team esp if the other team is a bobo team.

I haven't read much of the thread except to skim through it, but I think that some of our psycho fans are comparing this year's team to the 2008 team, some of our psycho fans are actually BITTER about Pastner's interviews, and some of our psycho fans are holding some of our other fans' opinion of our depth this year, to predictions on how well our freshmen were going to play.
