GameNight: 2/20/2014
EMU and NIU now going into 2 OTs.
A missed FT sent it into OT and another missed FT sends it on to 2 OTs...

What I find doubly amazing is that both Threloff and Riley had big games.

Riley? Really? If you call that a big game, Armstead's and Bowie's stats classify as big games too.

Seriously. Threloff had 28 points, 17 boards, 3 blocks and was 9-11 from the line. Riley and Bowie basically posted the same line and it wasn't all that spectacular.

Steve is probably including the 4 blocks and 2 steals, but you're right. Threloff was the man tonight. A big stretch was when Murphy took Riley out and Threloff ate Hughley alive. That brought NIU back in the game.

Rockets blow a nineteen point second half lead in about eight minutes and score with 3 left to win at BG.

I just hope this season is the start of better things for the basketball program. We just need a couple of scorers to add to our strong defense.

Well, the Huskies may have irrepairably damaged EMU's at-large hopes.

7 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks, 2 steals.
That 13/4/2 line is a defensive terror.
Those are big numbers. Steals are an underrated (and underreported) defensive stat for a big man. Esp. when combined with blocks.

I'm going to toss a bone to our Huskie followers:
NIU > EMU,
EMU > Toledo,
Toledo > BC,
BC > Syracuse
Anyone have NIU and BC playing in the NCAAs finals?

It was a 50 minute game where there were 90 missed shots. I wouldn't call having a lot of rebounds in that game anything of note.

Pretty good point there. I had no idea both teams shot in the 20% range. Three pointers were abysmal but not really. More like two levels below abysmal. Still 18 boards for Threloff against a good rebounding team is noteworthy in my opinion.

Don't want to sound disagreeable, but EMU is NOT a good rebounding team.
I ASSUME it is because of the zone that defenders are not in optimal position to block out.
Instead they attempt to close out (and out away from the basket) on long shots so the offensive player actually has the rebounding advantage.
In man-to-man the defender should have inside position on the offensive player.
Am I on to something here???

Maybe it's not EMU who is bad at rebounding, maybe it is NIU who is GOOD at rebounding. I base this solely on the fact that NIU has outrebounded their opponents the past few games. Anytime a team collects 60+ rebounds, it could be because of the opponent, but in this case I believe that NIU just out hustles to get the boards.

My co-posters on the EMU board provided a good technical discussion of rebounding in a zone vs. man-to-man.
Good read.
