RE: Massive Renovation to Memphis Int'l Airport
I really wish I had documented a conversation I had with a co worker about this. Six months ago, I said they should demolish the A and C gates that run parallel to the B concourse and use the leftover gates for any possible expansion. That would alleviate the bottlenecks that occur with planes coming and going from some of the B gates. Plus, money is saved in the long run by not having to up keep the A and C gates. The plans look great.

Rumor is that Delta will only occupy only 8 gates on the B concourse in the near future. At least when the demo is done and all of the airlines consolidate to B, it will have the appearance of being a full airport.

Good - make more room for the SWs, Frontiers, and JetBlues.

The pictures made me think of the Charlotte airport. I hate that place because I always have to run the length of it to catch a connection, but it's a nice looking airport.

Hate Charlotte airport for the same reason - gotta be a track star to catch your connecting flight.

they should, but hope they don't

as a frequent traveller through most major airports, I love Charlotte...

compared to O'Hare, Hartsfield, DFW, Midway, Minneapolis, Detroit, LGA, Logan

What's the real expectations for Southwest?

They just released their new non stop flights from Dallas now that the Wright Amendment expired, and to my dismay Memphis was not on the list.

I still have to fly thru Houston to get to Memphis on SW and it isn't any cheaper than other alternatives.

Oh how I wish for hi speed train!

Why would they? It was International long before Amsterdam, and nothing has changed to maintain it. Until they (FAA) change the definition, MEM deserves its International standing.

I don't even think Southwest knows for sure. They have hopes, and according to a recent article are "closely monitoring" developments at MEM. Couple that with Levien's overtures to JetBlue, as well as, to a small extent, Republic's niche market, and it's an interesting time.

I hope the illustrations aren't final designs but provide essential concept renderings of only the necessary features (skylights, layouts, etc). I would like to see distinctive architectural or design details, if not cost-prohibitive. I want visitors to know they're in Memphis when they land, and for it to pervade their experience at the airport. I think they lost an opportunity to extend the martini design to the new garage structure by incorporating it in the exterior in some way. At the same time they hit a home run with the new logo. And, I know this is out of their control, but I wish the new ATC could've retained many of the sleek design elements of the older, shorter one (which, IRRC had several clones like the new one has, and was designed by IM Pei?).

Detroit, and Minneapolis are terrible. Airports are the most lonely places in the world. Someone is heading somewhere they don't want to go, and someone is heading to somewhere they wish they already were.

RE: Massive Renovation to Memphis Int'l Airport
The Memphis airport is sure a lot lonelier than it used to be. I remember it from ten or twenty years ago as a bustling, exciting place, a real hub of people meeting relatives and loved ones, people going on exciting vacations and cool places. The airport had neat shops and pretty good food, and before 911, lots of people waiting at gates for friends and loved ones. The atmosphere is quite depressing nowadays, esp. on a Saturday night. The place is empty.

hell, it was bustling 4 years ago. On my trips to LA, I would go JAX-MEM-LAX so I could get a BBQ sandwich.

No kidding, I have had to sprint from one gate to another in Detroit to catch a connecting flight with an hour between the two.

I like the Little Rock airport for ease and Love Field in Dallas for the same reason.
