Ohio State represents the state of Ohio. UC doesn't. I'm not saying they shouldn't have mentioned UC since we are THE highest ranked team in the state by far but it is what it is. I don't agree with it, but in the same breath, I'm not shocked by this and nobody should be either.
Ohio state owns the city of Dayton. Not saying that can't be changed over time, but it is fact. Just go into any dicks sporting goods store in Dayton. There are many racks of tosu gear. There is 1 small section of UD swag and you have to look real hard to find a wright state shirt in the store. Zero UC merchandise. I'd say that's a pretty good indicator as to what people want so I am not surprised the local sports media plays to it.

Hell I struggle to find UC gear at the Kohl's in Milford. However, there is a huge OSU section right in front of the store.
As far as the DDN goes, I think what people are saying is that things need to change. More Daytonians need to sip a bit of the UC Kook Aid.... I think they would find that they like it as an alternative to the Ohio State Gatorade.

RE: Annoyed at the Dayton Daily News
Dayton has always had a large number fans who root for UD basketball and OSU football. It's just the way things are. Since they follow OSU for football, a chunk of people started paying attention to their basketball program when it started winning again at the start of the 2000's.
15-20 years ago UC Basketball seemed to get decent coverage in the DDN. Understandable given where the program was at the time.

RE: Annoyed at the Dayton Daily News
I've lived in Dayton for 30+ years... before, during and after attending UC and sending 2 kids to school there. The DDN doesn't cover UC, IMO, for a few reasons: #1 UC was a member of a conference (the Great Midwest) that essentially kicked UD to the curb and out of the big league hoops conferences; #2 rightly or wrongly while UD doesn't consider The Other State Univ to be their competition or peer, especially in hoops, they very much think they are on a level with UC and our crosstown rival (who also doesn't get any press in the DDN either) and #3 finally the DDN does not consider the UC fanbase in Dayton to be a significant part of their readership. Like others have already stated, UC's presence in Dayton has become more vocal and visual in the past 15 years (billboards, calls to sports shows, UC caravan etc) but like most newspapers the DDN is way behind that curve
If the 'Cats continue to excel this year, the DDN, like the Columbus papers and dare I dream even the Cincy papers and radio stations will have no choice but to notice.

I contend that if they can write about a #21 ranked O$U playing Northwestern, they can write about #7 UC. I'll be interested to see how they handle the UL game.
As far as apparrel, I bought a couple UC t shirts at a Dayton area Meijer, and a UC flag at the Bellbrook Lowe's.

RE: Annoyed at the Dayton Daily News
I have been a subscriber to the Dayton Daily News for the last 25 years. The lack of any significant reporting of UC sports has always been a sore spot with me. A few years back, I conducted my own personal campaign with regular emails and faxes to the sports editor. I don't recall that he ever acknowledged any of them and it doesn't seem to have helped.
I did a bit of research and discovered that in Montgomery and the surrounding contiguous counties, there were as many UC students as O$U and many more UC students than Miami. Would love to see the same demographic for grads but couldn't find a source for it. I really believe that the newspaper is misjudging the level of interest, especially when it comes to Miami. Consider also that the campus of UC is about the same distance from downtown Dayton as Miami's campus. Yet, the Dayton Daily covers Miami sports WITH THEIR OWN WRITER and occasionally will pick up a story off the wire on UC.
I can understand to some extent the coverage of O$U. But, why would you carry a box score for the Urbana/Glenville State football game and omit the box score for a ranked UC team playing a conference opponenet?
Every Tuesday the Dayton rag has a column on the sidebar of the front sports page with an update on the rankings. On Feb.4 it read "Syracuse New No.1, Ohio State Unranked". The headline on Feb.11 read "Syracuse No.1, Ohio State Returns to Poll". Then, joy of joys, on Feb. 18 it read "Cincinnati No. 7, Ohio State No. 24 in AP Poll".
Maybe their is hope! I think if the Dayton paper got regular feedback from Dayton area UC fans, they might see the light.

My point exactly. Let's stand up and be heard; not in a belligerent way; just pointing out the facts to sports editors and writers that Dayton is Bearcat country too; student enrollment and alumni numbers make that case quite clearly. Those of us who care, by pointing it out to them will be far more effective than expending the same energy complaining to one another. Let's be proactive; our university and our teams deserve better.
