Conference officiating
So after Maryland last trip to Duke where an error in the possession arrow gave Duke the ball when it shouldn't have, the Terps end up losing by 2. Don't mistake this as me trying to say ACC officials intentionally did this to help Duke win or that if the correct call was given the Terps would have won. I'm not say that (I love a good conspiracy theory though). There was lots of time left and they just couldn't get it done.

Here is a link to the story if you are interested.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/terr...duke-game/

Here is something interesting from the article "Maryland was made aware of the error on its plane ride home to College Park, but an ACC spokesperson said the Terps didn’t request any sort of review of the situation. According to Hicks, “the matter has been and will be handled internally by the league office,” but a spokesman declined to provide further clarification concerning what constituted “handled internally.”

What I want to know is which teams are perceived as getting "all" of the calls? I'm guessing OSU and UM. Anybody else? Does it matter football or b-ball?

Here's a little secret, it's not Michigan. 03-shhhh Don't believe a word of what Dexter has to say on that matter.

It's all about who your team is and if you believe in conspiracy theories and how long your memory is. 2 years ago Michigan got a couple breaks in basketball. This year, not so much.

Penn State believes the entire league is out to get them, and it all started with a lucky break for Michigan way back when. Michigan got another break a year later, cementing the conspiracy forever.

The 2012 football season saw a couple game-changing bad calls against Michigan. One was really bad against Iowa.

Conversely, Nebraska enjoyed lucky breaks throughout that season with bad calls going their way and the ball bouncing their way seemingly game after game.

It is not the big 2, little 8, from the 70's.

I have heard plenty about the B1G out to get PSU and Conspiracy of Sparty (ConSparticy). Glad to know it not just big 2.

I just watched the Nebraska vs Northwestern Hail Mary (again, for the 4,000 time)…OMG that is still insane and awesome. Man I miss football.

The ACC has a perception problem in my opinion. Whether its true or not…the All Carolina Conference SEEMS to favor its home teams of NC.

It seems almost everyone playing at South Bend does. I'm thinking of Pitt two seasons ago, and Stanford on the goal line. And that's just the recent ones, aside of course from the many penalties called on your Spartans this year.

Terps, you'll learn quickly once you're a part of the conference why IU's Assembly Hall is known as the Hall of Calls.

That sounds ominous. I look forward to it! Comcast Center can get pretty raucous but it is the fans not the refs to watch out for. It isn't for the faint of heart or small children.

RE: Conference officiating
My theory on bias of refs in general goes like this:

1. All in all, bad call balance out for the most part. Some calls go for you and some against you, but it's not usually disproportionate one way or the other.

2. It's easier to call a foul that hurts your team a bad call than a foul that helps it.

3. Fouls you see as bad are remembered more often.

4. The bad calls against a team that lost are remembered much more than the bad calls against the team that won.

5. Since bad calls aren't remembered as often against the teams that win more, they have a reputation for getting preferential treatment, true or not (and always will as long as they continue to win).

Note: I do think there legitimately some bias in basketball, but it's not to a particular team, it's to the home team. Maybe this isn't true at this level of basketball (I'm not good enough watching to judge), but I think its true at a lot of levels. This is due to refs being blamed a lot more and responsible for a lot more judgement calls than in other sports.
