Can't say that a big surprise. Having said that, all the best to Mike.

I like Mike. Good for him, and sadly, good for UH.

Yeah that struck me as odd. I just kind of assumed they'd stash him into some role in baseball ops and re-visit the roles of the coaching staff after this season.

UH already has a strength and conditioning coach, Lee Fiocchi, listed on the roster, so either he got let go or reassigned to another position in the athletic department, or he is still the guy and Taylor is the strength coach in name only. Both possibilities I suppose.

What will be interesting to watch is how the coaching staff is shaken up after the season. I can't see Taylor continuing as the "strength coach" for the long term. I don't think Couch or Frank Anderson are going anywhere, so that leaves Ryan Shotzberger as the odd man out.

RE: Mike Taylor
I think it is clearly a holding position for him until next year when he gets back on the field. There aren't any limits on the number of S&TC coaches. Giving him a S&TC position means he can still "coach" a bit during training unlike if he was in ops.

I believe it allows him to be in the dugout during games, but I don't think it allows him to pitch BP or hit fungos.

The real question is if Taylor will have to (get to?) wear shorts and a polo shirt instead of the uniform like many S&C coaches do.

I guess we will find out Wednesday.

He's a very good coach that saw his time at Rice cut short by questionable behavior and then big donor politics -- hopefully he can land on his feet.
