Doug McDermott moving up the charts
I saw a graphic today that McDermott will soon pass two of my heroes Otis Birdsong and Elvin Hayes in the college basketball career scoring list.

Hayes and Birdsong finished with 2800 points and change. When Birdsong graduated a decade after Hayes in 1977, Hayes was 4th all time, and Birdsong was 6th. Today, those two are in the 11-14 range all time.

I haven't seen McDermott play very often, but he's always been impressive to me. He averages 21 points a game for his career.

Birdsong was one of the purest shooters ever. He averaged 24 points a game for his career and played before the 3 point line was created. He might have scored 3000 under today's rules. As it was, he made a ton of old fashioned three point plays. He was so strong, he'd often jump into a defender, draw contact, and still make the shot. He was the first guard to make $1M a year in the NBA, and is one of a handful of guards in NBA history with a career FG% over 50%.

Hayes was a man amongst boys. He averaged 31 points per game for his career, as his 2800 points came over 3 seasons because freshmen were ineligible. The NCAA outlawed the dunk because of the Big E.

It's remarkable that McDermott will score more career points than these two all time greats. It's even more remarkable that he'll do it playing for his Dad. Congrats to he and his father for a wonderful run.

Congrats to McDermott on a fine accomplishment.

One thing though about your post. While I loved Elvin Hayes and he was one of my favorite players growing up, the no-dunk policy was widely regarded as having been brought about by that guy out at UCLA, Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). Hayes and the Cougars whipped Alcindor's Bruins in 1968 ending UCLA's 47-game winning streak in the one of the best games I ever saw.

RE: Doug McDermott moving up the charts
he's got a chance to finish #2 but to do that he'd need 426 points. think he's got 6 regular season games, 3 BET games, and then the NCAA tourney. that's a pretty tall order there..

#5 seems reasonable. that would be like 243 points. #4 would be 342 points away. #3(Lionel Simmons from LaSalle) would be 394 points away.

to me, 2 huge names are 8 and 9 coming up. #8 is Oscar Robertson. #9 is Danny Manning.

There hasn't been a college player with a career average over 30 points per game since Larry Bird in 1979.

Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain & Elvin Hayes are the only college players to average 30+ points and 17+ rebounds per game for their careers.

Glenn Robinson did average over 30 points for the 93-94 season, but not his "college career".

Heckuva player.

I was looking at the all-time scoring list, and the most amazing thing about it is that the top player scored 400 points more than anyone else without the 3-point line.

That player, of course, was Pistol Pete. Like McDermott, his Dad was his college coach. Yet his LSU teams never even appeared in the NCAA tournament.

The Big O is # 8 on the all-time list despite no 3-point line, and on top of it he only played 3 years because freshman weren't eligible to play back then. There's a reason the Player of the Year award is named after him.

Another shocking fact: only two players on the top-25 all-time scoring list won an NCAA title: Danny Manning of Kansas (#9) and Tyler Hansbrough (#12, currently 1 spot ahead of McDermott).

How many others led their teams to Final Fours? Robertson, Bird, Hayes, Reddick, Tisdale, Calbert Cheaney?

Of course, Robertson, Manning, Hansbrough, Hayes, Bird & Tisdale all grabbed 1000 career rebounds. They are among the Top 10-12 all-time scorers to do so.

The List:
McDermott is 10th with 2,917 points.
He has a pivot move like McHale, a fadeaway like Bird, and can drain the three.

Danny Manning is 9th with 2,951 points.
Oscar Robertson is 8th with 2,973 points (3 yrs).
Some great names on the list.

Oscar Robertson averaged 33.8 points, 15.2 rebounds, and 7.1 assists for his college career. That's alot of rebounds for a Guard.

Oscar played without the 3-pt line. Guys like him and Maravich would have unreachable numbers if they played with the 3-pt line and would have had 4 years and 30+ games per year like players now have. Both Pete and Oscar played less than 90 games in their careers.

I have. Jerry West is still a better pure shooter.

Another outstanding shooter. That was a special era . Dunking wasn't in vogue then so You did it the hard way. Hand eye coordination while running.

RE: Doug McDermott moving up the charts
Doug McDermott on #9 Creighton scored 22 last night at Georgetown.
He passed Danny Manning last night (I screwed up my numbers on the previous post).

McBuckets is now 9th on the all time scoring list, 7 pts behind the great Oscar Robertson.

1. Pete Maravich (LSU) - 3667 pts.
2. Freeman Williams (Portland State) - 3249 pts.
3. Lionel Simmons (La Salle) - 3217 pts.
4. Alphonso Ford (Miss Valley) - 3165 pts.
5. Harry Kelly (Texas Southern) - 3066 pts.
6. Keydren Clark (St Peter's) - 3058 pts.
7. Hersey Hawkins (Bradley) - 3008 pts.
8. Oscar Robertson (Cincinnati) - 2973 pts.
9. Doug McDermott (Creighton) - 2966 pts.
10. Danny Manning (Kansas) - 2951 pts.

Creighton's last regular season game is at home Saturday night vs the Friars. So he has a minimum of 3 games remaining (Sat., then BET QF, then NCAA tourney).

I definitely recommend trying to watch McDermott in action.

somewhere between 3-10 games left..

worst case scenario 3 games 20 points per game- 60 more points- #7 all time
best case scneario 10 games 30 points per game- 300 points- #2 all time

realistically, he's going to finish somewhere in that 2-5 range.

Yeah, big almost 100 point gap between 5 and 4 and another decent gap of 52 between 4 and 3. 4 or 5 probably the most likely landing spots.
