Qatar using slave labor on World Cup
How the hell was their bid accepted over the US?
Quote:185 Nepalese workers had died on World Cup construction sites in 2013 alone because they had been denied food and water.
Evidence is growing of forced labour in the Qatari construction industry responsible for building the stadiums and other infrastructure. Speaking to EurActiv in August last year, Aidan McQuade, the director of Anti-Slavery International, called for a boycott of the event.
‘Slave state’
MEPs and others who attended the Parliament hearing appeared sceptical that the charter would be enforced.
Gilbert Houngbo, deputy director general of the International Labour Organization (ILO), spoke of the “legitimate concerns with labour conditions in Qatar” and the “need for a decisive turnaround” by the Qatari authorities.
He cited “unacceptable practices concerning migrant workers,” including the absence of a minimum wage, delays in salary payments, human rights violations and intimidation of workers who dared to complain.
“Workers should be able to have a voice – a voice without fear of retaliation,” Houngbo said, urging the authorities to allow worker representation on stadium construction sites.
Sharan Burrow, the secretary-general of the international trade union confederation (ITUC), used less diplomatic language to describe the situation of foreign workers in Qatar.
“Qatar is a slave state for a million of migrant workers,” she said, claiming that some were often beaten and abused.
“FIFA must rerun the vote” on the 2022 World Cup attribution, Burrow stressed, warning that if nothing was done “more than 4,000 workers will have died before a ball is kicked off in 2022”.

Allegations of bribery[edit]
During May 2011, allegations of bribery on the part of two members of the FIFA Executive Committee were tabled by Lord Triesman of the English FA. These allegations were based on information from a whistleblower involved with the Qatari bid. FIFA has since opened an internal inquiry into the matter, and a revote on the 2022 World Cup remains a possibility if the allegations are proven. FIFA president Sepp Blatter has admitted that there is a ground swell of popular support to re-hold the 2022 vote won by Qatar.[13]
In testimony to a UK parliamentary inquiry board in May 2011, Lord Triesman alleged that Trinidad and Tobago's Jack Warner demanded $4 million for an education center in his country and Paraguay's Nicolás Léoz asked for an honorary knighthood in exchange for their votes. Also, two Sunday Times reporters testified that they had been told that Jacques Anouma of the Ivory Coast and Issa Hayatou of Cameroon were each paid $1.5 million to support Qatar's bid for the tournament. All four have denied the allegations.[14] Mohammed bin Hammam, who played a key role in securing the games for Qatar, withdrew as a candidate for president of FIFA in May 2011 after being accused of bribing 25 FIFA officials to vote for his candidacy.[15] Both Bin Hammam and Warner were suspended by FIFA in wake of these allegations,[16] with Warner reacting to his suspension by questioning Blatter's conduct and adding that FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke had also told him that Qatar had bought the 2022 World Cup.[17] Valcke subsequently issued a statement denying he had suggested it was bribery, saying instead that the country had "used its financial muscle to lobby for support". Qatar officials denied any impropriety.[18]

Anybody with half a brain knew that somebody had been bribed somewhere when it was announced that Qatar was hosting.

If FIFA cares at all about their credibility and image, they will award the games to another nation.
If they do not, I hope the games are boycotted.
I'm sure very few westerners will attend the games anyway, but there are probably enough wealthy people in the Middle East to make the games "successful"

My question was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, the FIFA is as rigged as any sports association gets.

Have they ever cared before?
I have never understood why people look to organizations like FIFA or the IOC or the NFL, etc. to show "integrity" (or anything similar) in their business dealings. These people simply don't give a sh*t. They are here for the money. Period.

I'm sorry for the slave laborers who have passed away, but that number pales in comparison to the number of spectators who will die of heat stroke during the actual games.

It looks like even FIFA may have finally got the memo:
http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/n...up-3151577
If this happens I could see the United States make a strong pitch to be the host, especially if the US is interested in hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics. The US has plenty of stadia that would be available as the World Cup would not interfere with the NFL or College Football. The 1994 World Cup also easily had the highest average attendance at more than 68,000 spectators per match.

It is estimated that there are as many as 30 million slaves in the world today.

That estimate is way off. Being able to choose ones master does not make them less a slave. We just are comfortable slaves.

I hope that comes to pass. I saw Brazil v Netherlands in the 1994 world cup at the Cotton Bowl, and that was easily the most memorable sporting event I've been to. Both fan bases are well known for being lively. My son would be hitting 18 around this time, so this is something he still might want to go to with me... otherwise, that's more or less the last chance for the US to host in my lifetime...

That is an insult to the true slaves out there.
