A totally dominating second period by the US. They scored 6 straight in the period as they overwhelmed Slovakia down low. Nice start to the Olympics.

I happened to be home late this morning and watched most of the 2nd period. I felt bad for Slovenia. The US team couldn't seem to do anything wrong.

Interesting that goal diferential is a tie breaker. Seems un-Olympic to promote running up the score. I didn't see the 3rd period. Did the US back off or did Slovenia right the ship?

Not to nitpick, but the US played Slovakia and not Slovenia.

Re: the score - the US did not score in the 3rd period. They played as though they were content with a 6 goal lead.

As my dad once said about the Russian novelists: who can keep track of all those sons of 'viches?

And how about the US team jersey!

That may be the best-looking US national team jersey in any sport in my adult life.

They are very nice. My only issue is that the logo makes me think of Union Pacific railroad

I still prefer the USMNT Centennial jerseys for best US National Jersey

A bit like saying the Swiss flag reminds you of the Red Cross! (Or the colors of the Union Jack remind you of the Stars & Stripes.)

I will give the nod to the white hockey sweater for two reasons:
- Having a big US shield and no number is better than having a small shield and a number;
- I like how the hockey sweater has red, white and blue in comparable orders of magnitude. That's hard to pull off -- usually it's done poorly, and a good dominantly-white design is better than a mediocre red/white/blue design. But this one pulls it off quite well.

On the other hand, the two stars on the front of the women's soccer jersey are a better touch (in appearance and in reflecting sports tradition) than the two dots on the sleeve of the men's hockey sweater.

But they are both really good jerseys.

Close. This is a very specific logo- A shield spilt with vertical stripes with the words in the upper blue portion. They are similar on several different fronts, as opposed to the Union Jack/Stars & Stripes sharing colors.

As for the Red cross/Swiss flag - the red cross logo was inspired by the Swiss flag. It is not a coincidence that they are similar.

This I agree with. The last attempt I can remember yielded this

That was my whole point: that since the US shield preceded and was the source of the UP logo, saying that the US shield is reminiscent of the UP logo is chronologically backwards -- not "wrong", but a bit ironic.

For the same reason, saying that the Swiss flag reminds one of the the Red Cross, or the UK colors remind one of the US colors, would also be chronologically backwards.

To be honest, I kinda thought that all of the above was obvious, which is why I limited it to one sentence (plus a parenthetical). But perhaps I was wrong.

Sorry, my mistake! Thanks for the correction. Slovakia probably wishes everyone thought it was Slovenia.

Slovenia played really well against the Russians today losing 4-2. Considering that Slovenia only has on NHL'er on its roster, the Kings Anze Kopitar, the result was pretty surprising. Of all the teams the US looked far and away the best in the opening game.
