Exclamation NCAA eyeing rule that could strike a huge blow to uptempo spread offenses
since half of our league runs up-tempo thought it deserves a thread

"The committee's proposal would allow defensive players to substitute within the first 10 seconds of the 40-second play clock"

"Offenses that snap the ball before 29 seconds remain on the play clock would receive a 5-yard delay-of-game penalty."

ECU runs a hybrid of the Air Raid but rarely gets a play off with 29 seconds left on the play clock. It generally takes our QB 10 seconds to read the coverage and decide whether or not to audible into another play.

Nick Saban must be behind this.

less about snap time more about guaranteed subs and being able to constantly rotate fresh legs, which goes against the purpose of the up-tempo which is to ware defense out and not allowing them to set up

and cincy actually runs a play under 10 secs, there qb sneaks on 3/4th and short

I wish we could run plays faster. We get up to the line of scrimmage fast enough but then our QB seems to go through multiple checks etc.. and we run the clock down. I think the proposed rule would stink. The offense has to suck it up and stay on the field and the Defense should not be able to have plenty of time to put the right package on the field plus fresh legs to deal with every offensive alignment.

RE: NCAA eyeing rule that could strike a huge blow to uptempo spread offenses
This is just laughable that this is being brought up. There is a difference between a player being tired and being injured. This is an advantage that the offense can create against defenses and the defense needs to find a way to counter it not make up a new rule. Can anybody name any other sport that delays one team so the other team can substitute personnel?

ECU has done this to. Though not as much as others. It's a BS rule change if it passes, the OL doesn't sub out.

I don't see how you could call a delay of game penalty on a team for running a play too fast. Maybe they should call it a speeding up the game penalty and in addition to the 5 yards they could add an extra commercial.

My vote is to make the triple option offense illegal and leave the uptempo offense alone. Man I hate the triple option.

RE: NCAA eyeing rule that could strike a huge blow to uptempo spread offenses
They definitely should not be able to make that call in the red zone. ECU definitely had a lot of success on the quick snap in the red zone especially after a receiving play that got us inside the 5yd line when our QB takes the quick snap and rolls in for a TD which he did 10 times last year. That rule effectively takes an advantage from the Offense and gives it to the Defense by allowing them plenty of time to put in the correct package to what the offense is trying to run. Beauty of the up tempo is it keeps the Defense off balance at times and with all the normal interruptions in a game...tv time outs etc.. it makes the games more interesting when it is flowing fast.

This is Saban all day. They'll entertain this rule but not the wildly dangerous cut block... Bc one 300 lb man diving at anothers knees is completely safe and being out of breath is too risky.

I have mixed emotions about this. I personally despise spread offenses, but I recognize that it gives programs which aren't able to recruit power football players a chance to win. This rule change will clearly give most P5 schools additional advantage over everybody else.

RE: NCAA eyeing rule that could strike a huge blow to uptempo spread offenses
We don't run this style of offense, nor does it seem that we will for as long as O'Leary is at UCF, yet I still think this is crap. The targetting stuff could be a good change, didn't read into it too deep, but messing with these uptempo offenses is silly. It's not like they're even dominating or creating a quantifiably unfair advantage.

I really don't care if teams run uptempo. As we saw with Baylor, you just need to keep the plays in front of you as best you can, make them get impatient, and pound them with a running game (clock control) when on offense.

It was the same story when we've played Houston (especially in the Art Brile days)
