Exclamation NCAA proposes rule changes for targeting, defensive substitutions
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...stitutions

"The committee has recommended a change what will allow defenses to substitute players within the first 10 seconds of the 40-second play clock, though not in the final two minutes of a half. Should an offense snap the ball before the play clock reaches 29 seconds, the offense will be called for a five-yard delay of game."

Ridiculous. Even though UAB has been killed by fast-paced offenses, its stupid to penalize the offense because the defense can't keep up. And its not about player safety. It has more to do with the top level teams getting schooled by these fast-tempo teams of "lesser" stature. Just like the 3-point shot has made it possible for smaller schools to keep pace with larger schools and as the option offense was the great equalizer in the past, so is the fast, uptempo offense of today.

This is ridiculous. Hopefully it doesn't pass. Why even have a play clock if teams can't snap it while it's running?

I guess you see which schools are pulling the strings on the rules.

Let me get this right. If the offense is too fast getting their play started, they will be penalized for "delay of game"?

Exactly. I bet the rule is straight from Saban's lips to the NCAA's ears.

Why not just say you can't snap the ball until both head coaches signal they're ready and stop the pretense.

I'm thinking that's kind of overstating a ten second delay.

No way the delay of game on the offense passes. I'm in favor of getting rid of the 15 yard penalty if targeting call is reviewed and determined that it was not targeting.

I think to a degree the game is getting out of hand in favor of offenses & you've got to give the defenses some chance. Not sure if this would be the way though. The proposition seems to only state on 40sec clock, under what conditions is there a 40sec play clock as sometimes there's a 25sec clock as well???

40 seconds from end of last play; 25 seconds after dead ball/stopped clock restart.

This is all about Nick Saban trying to hold on to his old school way of playing football. The fast paced offenses are leaving him behind. I hope it gets voted down by a large margin.

it wont pass .
if you really want to stop injury ....have less play in a game
normally player dont get injured if they dont play or spend less time on the field
how you do that
use the nfl clock system ,,,2 hours game not 5 hours

It's crap. Crap crap crap.

The game evolves. With every offensive innovation, sooner or later a defense will be designed to stop it.

Maybe it'll just take someone smarter than Little Nicky Saban to come up with it, though.

I love these jailbreak offenses. Mike Leach got it right. Want to protect players? Outlaw the blitz. Outlaw rushing more guys then the offense has blockers. Outlaw hitting the QB. Is Saban advocating for those things? Nope.
