Yup. If you've never been in the position of having another person to call your humanity into doubt based on the color of your skin, you have zero right to judge what a 19 year old (who already was stressed by the game) does in response to that.

Smart made a mistake, in the most pragmatic sense of the word (i.e. it was a bad move for him personally, no matter how justified he was in responding), whereas the other guy is a "piece of crap" inside and outside of an arena.
there wasn't a racial slur

And you know that how? By listening to that raw audio? Please....it's funny how that's the only thing that we can hear clearly.

Why would ESPN cover up a racial slur. They would be all over that if that is what happened. It's funny how everyone is dying to make this about race.

Yep. It seems like some folks can't see the Forest because of all the trees.

From what I have read about the video, it was footage from a floor camera that was not being used for game audio. It had a local microphone mounted on the camera but the range of those types of microphones is very limited and local. The ball was dead after the whistle and generally speaking the crowd noise is a little lower at that point.
The fact that you could hear Orr's voice on that video is also an explanation as to why Marcus Smart could hear him and what he said over all the other crowd noise. It goes both ways.
I think the idea that this video was doctored is far fetched given the short amount of time between the incident and the video being released. Also TTU is using this video as evidence to corroborate Orr's claim that he said "piece of crap".
There are reports that right after the incident Smart was indicating to coaches that he made a racial slur. I will have to find a link for that. IF that is true then either:
A) Smart misheard what Orr said.
B) Smart interpreted what Orr said as a racial slur.
C) Smart lied in order to attempt to condone his actions.
D) Orr lied and there is a massive cover up involving himself, TTU, and a third party video production crew (I think it was ESPN's camera but I am not sure).

Smart has backed off his claim of a racial slur being used.

***Disclaimer*** Orr is probably a mean and overly intense fan.

And how would it benefit me? I don't really care what it was about, the old fart deserved it and will think twice about running him mouth again.

I don't think he "deserved" anything, but I do think they both regret the incident. It was an intense situation and the lady clapping in Smart's face didn't help matters. Both have apologized. And, so far, the racial slur appears to be interweb myth. I'd think with all the people within earshot, someone would have spoken up by now for their fifteen minutes of fame.

RE: Dana O'Neil Nails It - Travis Ford let Marcus Smart down
I hate racism. I have spent the past three years living in another part of the world where I and my family were living as a minority. There were times where we were treated with contempt and hatred because we were 'different'. My kids were subjected to this at times and that is what hurt the most.
I particularly hate the racism that was born in America. It came out of a horrid history of slavery where southern, white (mostly) land owners enslaved young black africans. Any form of racism is to be rejected. I assume everyone on this board feels that racism is to be rejected.
The video of Marcus Smart and Jeff Orr could possibly fit into a very ugly, racial narrative. You have individuals that would fit perfect roles if Hollywood made this into a movie. We all want to see the oppressed exalted and the oppressors condemned.
We may want to see justice so badly that we buy into a narrative that is not true. I think that is what is happening here. I think media outlets know what sells and how to play on emotions.

Dadgum, that ruins the race issue hope of many here.

Now they have to dig up dirt somewhere else to show off their political correctness.

BTW my opinion is that B), C), or both are true. IF I am right it says a lot about Marcus Smart. It would fit a pattern of blame shifting that Marcus has used in the past.

I don't understand what you are arguing about.

It was the wrong move and its hardly the first time someone has been heckled by a fan in college.

Is it easy to walk away? no

Does that excuse what he did? no

All i'm saying is lets look at from his perspective and lets not throw the kid under the bus so quickly since he was obviously provoked.

What is it wrong? Yes

Should he have walked away? I dunno because if he was called the N word, i think he did well not punching that guy.

I didn't throw him under the bus, I just said it was the wrong move and he has to react better.

This is gonna hurt, but I agree with you.

RE: Dana O'Neil Nails It - Travis Ford let Marcus Smart down
The main reason I can't stand Marcus Pseudo-Smart:

Quote:Memphis got a nice win against Gonzaga. Saturday’s featured "GameDay" special was almost immediately overshadowed by the Marcus Smart mess, but for posterity’s sake, let’s note that the Tigers played about 32 minutes of very so-so basketball before turning it on down the stretch and edging Gonzaga on its own floor, 60-54. It wasn’t a statement win, or even particularly impressive. But it was a nice win all the same.
and ESPN
