This is the classic worst case winter storm for the I-85 corridor ... cold cold air dips into the jet ... a low pumps up moisture from the gulf ... and then another low forms off the coast of Savannah/Charleston and starts back filling moisture out of the Atlantic. It can produce a foot+ (and has done so a few times in the not too distant past) almost directly along I-85.
If you are looking to fly in or out of CLT, GSP, ATL, AVL, CAE, or RDU this week ... good luck. You'll need it. Particularly for GSP and CLT.
Your abbreviations are killing me... Except ATL, I know what that means
CLT -> Charlotte Douglas International ... US Air hub
GSP -> Greenville-Spartanburg International ... FedEx regional, BMW cargo facilities
AVL -> Asheville Regional ... hippies fly too
CAE -> Columbia Metro Regional ... UPS hub
RDU -> Raleigh-Durham International

Central Va could be ground zero for this thing apparently. Depending on who you listen to I've heard/seen 4-6 inches (which is still a pretty big deal round here) BUT a couple models are showing us, east of I-95, checking in with a cool 25-30 inches.
That would shut us down around here for days, depending on the next days high temps. Gonna get interesting reaaaal quick once it starts.

I think you meant west of I-95 getting blasted? Who knows what will happen but already planning to work from home Thursday. There isn't a chance in Hades schools will be open.

Looks like a lock a foot ... maybe even several inches (locally) beyond tomorrow in Greenville-spartanburg. SC has activated the National Guard.
Gentlemen ... I suspect Al Gore must be in the area.

Yea, West of 95, good catch. Was doing work (shudder) at the same time.
This could get nasty in areas. Heard one weather chick make the comment, passed along from the weather service, that people should be prepared to be "stranded in their homes for days and maybe even weeks". Holy hell.

Got 1/4 in of ice on everything now. Not looking good. We expect to be out of power the second the next wave comes through here in the morning. looking for additional 1/4 to 1/2in of ice in the morning and 2 to 3 of snow tomorrow. It is dead calm now and getting colder. Damn...I hate this schit with a passion.

you ever get ice storms in Idaho? They're horrible. Almost guaranteed power outages and they're not even nice to look at

Yeah, the power has gone out a few times already this year. People take the opportunity to drink or go for a walk.

Well yea. Ok a walk. Our good friends in Raliegh several years ago were without power for 2-3 weeks. With three kids under age 10, and a dog. And jobs. That's no picnic.

Close to a 1/2 inch of ice on everything now. Power flickering on and off. I expect it to go off any moment. Pine tree limbs are snapping like the sound of shotguns. Not pretty. Dragged out my old Kerosene heater and fired it up this AM in prep. F this BS weather.

We have about 8 or 9 inches in Charlotte and still snowing pretty hard.
Would probably be well over a foot by now if we didn't have sleet beating the snow down from 3pm to 1am yesterday.

Damn...Just got the power back on tonight since shortly after the above post. Our area was hammered with freezing rain. My back yard looks like it was hit by a tornado. Three trees down and limbs every damn where. I was prepared this time. I have my house wired for my generator and between gas logs and the Kerosene heater..we stayed warm. Even watched the US/Russia game this Am on the 60. Drank a ton of Vodka. Good times.
Still over 5000 out of power in our area. I have to commend the linemen from all over...they have been working their asses off trying to restore power. We really do take utilities for granted. If the power goes off for a month?...All schit would hit the fan.

IF you don't mind me asking, what does a whole house generator cost these days? I'm looking around and seeing quotes ranging from $8k to north of $10k. I'm talking a generator that will run everything.

I did a Generac 14KWH and had it installed for about $5k. Count your circuits, you shouldn't need more than 15 to get everything covered. Make sure you get the automatic transfer panel. Installation can add $1000 - $1500 depending on how far the gas line has to run, and local costs.

Thanks for the info. It'd be nice to not have to worry about the power going out.
