Recruiting Recap: Do you have Preferred Walk-ons and GrayShirts at your school?
Nebraska is the school I recall that really got into walk-ons in a huge way, tailoring a program for them. I understand preferred walk-ons get to have a locker like a scholarship player and also come to all the team meetings...whereas other walk-ons do not and it is also my understand that the coaches generally discourage and/or run off walk-ons that are not Preferred walk-ons.

Tulsa U may have two Grayshirts recruited in 2014, that is, they have been promised scholarships for 2015 but must wait until January 2015 to enroll and receive their athletic scholarship.

PREFERRED WALK-ONS

RE: Recruiting Recap: Do you have Preferred Walk-ons and GrayShirts at your school?
Clemson has three grayshirts.

LB Jalen Williams, and twin brother LBs J.D. and Judah Davis.

Williams didn't have any high level offers, but Clemson DC Brent Venables wanted to offer him after seeing him perform during camp. He was the Defensive MVP in the SC North/South All-Star game.

The Davis twins play at nearby D.W. Daniel HS. For whatever reason players coming out of Daniel are never really rated high despite them consistently being high level performers. Nuk Hopkins, Jarvis Jenkins, Deshawn Williams, and C.J. Davidson are all players who have contributed at Clemson from Daniel. The Davis twins are the sons of Clemson Hall of Fame LB Jeff Davis. They are young, Dabo mentioned age-wise they should be juniors this year, so they are still growing. They are also raw, but with the depth we have they aren't going to be counted on to contribute immediately.

Preferred walk-ons this year are Socastee ATH Hunter Renfrow, West Florence PK Alex Spence, and Daniel PK Christian Groomes.

Renfrow was a flex wing QB and made the Shrine Bowl as an Ath. He's got good speed, and can contribute in many different ways...RB, WR, DB, Kick returner. He took a walk-on offer over a scholarship offer to Appalachian State.

Spence was initially offered a scholarship but was approached about grayshirting when we hit a numbers crunch. Instead he offered to pay his own way until a scholarship opens up to be able to compete for the PK job this year. Spence was also a Shrine Bowl player, hitting the winning FG to lead SC over NC.

Groomes kicks for nearby DW Daniel. With Daniel being right next to Clemson and Dabo's son being a JV player who dressed for varsity he's intimately familiar to the staff. He'll also be in the PK mix in fall camp.

We also picked up a mid-year walk-on ATH Kurt Fleming. He was a high school RB who committed to Army in 2010 after missing his senior year with a knee inuury. As a junior he rushed for over 1000 yards and ran track. Played in the minors for Atlanta and Seattle. The Braves are paying his way through school. He's 6' 225lbs and runs a 4.47 40.

Two preferred walkons so far and could be as many as five greyshirts.

WVU has preferred walkons and greyshirts. I think there are 7 preferred walkons this year, and 6 early enrolls.

Rutgers is a big user of preferred walk-ons and early enrollees. We generally don't greyshirt recruits at least since the start of Schiano era.
