He asked who else on the Razorbacks would be capable of scoring 35 points in a game? They came to the conclusion nobody. In the past, Rotnei Clarke was capable on a given night. B.J. Young might have been. Their point being that a good team needs at least three players who are capable of putting up big numbers in a game. Not that they do every game, but the potential is there. And someone who has done it before.
I got to thinking about UALR. Who is reasonably capable of putting up say 25 points on a given night except Will? I'm not sure there is anyone else since nobody has ever done it. Josh, maybe? That's about it. And that's why we have trouble getting into the very top echelon of our league. We never have great scorers, or enough of them. Our championship season, we did have two players who were capable of doing that. Solo and Matt. And we had enough complementary players to get us over the hump.
I want to see players who can put up big numbers in our league. They might not be able to do it against the Duke's and that type of competition, but those who can do it in the SBC. Can this staff recruit those type of players? Haven't so far. And I think that's why some of you have been pretty vocal about a coaching change. And I think that's why we don't have a larger fan base. We don't do anything exciting to bring fans out to the games. When we do win, we win ugly. Granted, I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty, but people want to see excitement and quite honestly, our program hasn't been very exciting, since Wimp left.
For all this personality quirks, Wimp had some exciting teams. And at least, one season, got to the NIT. So dedicated fans like most of us will continue to come because we enjoy the games, but to draw new fans, the program needs to do something more significant than just muddling along in mediocrity. And that's my opinion late this afternoon. It could change by tonight.
