Understatement of the year. :) I think by "little extra thrill" you mean "one of the most exciting moments of a parent's life." Also by "little extra thrill," one might mean "significant help clearing up that home flood, in fact maybe a new home altogether, not to mention a shiny new SUV, and maybe a few baubles and shiny things." :) Way to go, Mom. Couldn't be happier for you and #15.

Unless more results come in, looks like Gaines had the 2nd fastest 3-cone drill time for CB's and tied for 5th fastest 20-yard shuttle (4.04, behind 4 guys with a 4.00). Very impressive day overall.

Ugh, sorry guys. This link should work. Sorry for the confusion. This was on the front page of the NFL combine site.

Pretty exciting day for Owl fans (and particularly OwlMom15). The number 1 rated kicker in the draft and now Gaines big day. Lots of good pub from the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl for Rice followed quickly by the combine...puts the Liberty Bowl disappointment farther back our memory and more importantly brings Rice football into the discussions of NFL fans.

You know Talon...when I first read the write up on him on NFL.com, I was so upset that I had a hard time sleeping :( I was like... who is this bozo who dislikes my kid this much? I'm so glad that Phillip did so well. When he came home from his training camp in Florida, I asked him if he was nervous about the combine and he said "no.... I know what I have to do" I've been so amazed over his life on how focused he has always been. He has such a quiet confidence that I admire so much. I was so nervous this morning before he ran that I broke out the bloody marys .....lol

:)

But let's limit those baubles and shiny things to Mom _only_. :) (An NFL career is such an uncertain thing -- need to save those $$$.)

Philip's a special case, of course (a Rice degree means other solid earnings opportunities, outside of football). But it's both sad and unsurprising that a lot of NFL guys don't have much left after their playing days. I mean who among us could budget so that our earnings for our first few years out of school would last a lifetime? Most people's current spending is based on their current paycheck. Plus, the average NFLers spend so much time with the superstars (who might earn 15 times what the average guys do and play three to four times as long, but are still their peers), and they're all peers -- that has to throw off the average guys' conception of what they can spend.

If I were ever in the position to give an NFL rookie advice (and I don't see that happening), I would suggest he take his take-home $ amount for his first season, divide by 30, and pretend that's what he earned that year, because that's the lifestyle he could be sure he could sustain. Live off that small # and save the rest. He'd live more like a poor grad student than an NFL player, but he wouldn't have to worry about his future at all. Then if he gets another year in the league, he can give his lifestyle a big raise: take year 2, divide by 30, and add that to what he was living on from year 1 -- probably doubling what he gives himself to live on. Rinse and repeat.

Sorry for going OT and semi-ranty. It's just that I think about lifetime purchasing power a lot: I work in defined benefit pension consulting. The idea of someone having lifetime earnings of half a million or a million by 25, but spending it all and then the rest of his life not knowing how he'll get by, causes me an inexplicable amount of stress every time I think about it.

Watched Gaines run....err...should I say SMOKE THEM at the combine today. Great to hear Eisen and co. say that he would be one of the first, if not the first, corner off the board. Great day for Rice football! Thanks Philip for all your work here at Rice. Go be that lock down corner in the NFL....and wherever you go, I'm rooting for ya!

The only knocks that really remain are that he played at a lower-level conference, but the way he played, I don't think you can hold that against him; and the lack of interceptions (think Darrell Green in the NFL).

Keep this in mind from last year (second round): David Amerson (NC State), 6'3" 205. Combine stats: 4.44 40, 15 reps, 35.5 vertical, 10'7" broad jump. He was drafted in the 2nd round, pick #19 last year. Arm length is a touch short compared to Amerson, and Amerson's hands were huge. But I seriously think 2nd or 3rd round is possible.

And I am totally shocked by that time. I know he sticks to guys, but I didn't see that speed coming. Honestly, I pegged Callahan a touch faster on the field, so if true, Callahan could also surprise folks next year.

Well done, Philip and family, and to the coaches who helped him get there (Rice and otherwise).

Well now I can say it....lol Phillip ran a 4.33 this summer, donte ran a 4.35 and Bryce ran a 4.38. So yeah Bryce is plenty fast as I've been saying about Phillip :-)

Owl Mom--Last year at Pro Day for Rice, McGuffie ran an unofficial 4.0 40.....and no I am not kidding. I saw it. And the scout who timed it turned and chunked his watch, saying, "There's no way this is right." I don't know what the official time was. . . . but I know what that watch said. Hope Philip makes another scout toss his watch.

Also with Wilson and McDonald this year's crop of Rice NFL prospects speaks that you can get a shot and play in the NFL coming from Rice. Ross should catch on at least in camp if not in season with a team as well.

The more Bailiff can keep two or three pro prospects coming out of his program every year, the more he helps himself and Rice football.

BTW--which pro teams will be looking for kickers this season?
I know one team on Kirby in Houston that needs a new kicker BIG TIME. Good bye Bullock.

RE: Boswell and Gaines invited to NFL Draft Combine
Love seeing all of the good press Gaines is getting, but I'm a bit perturbed at how overlooked these scouts/writers say he has been.

He was the preseason defensive player of the year, led the NCAAs in pass break ups in 2012, and his stats were insane this year when you look at how few times he was targeted. I get how he helped his stock, but it's painful to hear how poorly these scouts seem to evaluate players from smaller schools. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised since this happens every year. For kicks, just look at Richard Sherman's pre-combine scouting report.

Yes it is funny how they bash the lack of INTs when opposing OC's knew not to throw to the side Gaines was on. Seems the opposing OC's are way smarter than these "draft gurus". These guys remind me of the "recruiting experts" the ones who rate a player highly until he signs with Rice.
