Goodbye Thursday College Football
Quote:CBS will televise eight Thursday night games in 2014 and will feature play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and color analyst Phil Simms on every game, according to a Wednesday announcement by CBS and the NFL.

In addition to broadcasting eight early season games, CBS will produce a total of 14 Thursday night games and two Saturday evening games. The remaining games will air on NFL Network.

Having NFL on a broadcast network will further erode Thursday night college ratings. Expect more Friday and Wednesday games.

I don't think this would be enough to cancel Thursday night games. I know it's a network but usually the NFL Thursday night matchups are crap.

They certainly won't go away completely. The biggest incentive for going to Thursday, though, was the chance for a large TV audience. The number of people watching Thursday games won't be as high.

What a shame. I used to really look forward to those Thursday night games.

You mean on Sunday TV because they are blacked out...right?

That aside, does this really do that much more "damage"?

If you're a sports nut, you already have NFL Network and weren't watching the college matchups. Otherwise, you went to a hangout to watch all the big screens, anyway.

It probably matters for those who care about Big Bang Theory.

It's blasphemous that the NFL try to encroach in our Sacred Saturdays though.

They may not go away completely but it's going to absolutely kill the ratings unless it's two top 10 teams or something...which isn't going to be likely on a Thursday anyway.

It will hurt, but not destroy. Each sport has a fan base of its own and then come the crossover fans. If you are an NFL fan who also watches College it will come down to who is playing, same with a college fan who also follows NFL. NFL guys will watch NFL and College guys will watch college.

NFL just changing networks for their Thurdays Night games. I've had the NFL Network all along and did not choose my viewing habits based on the channel the game was on but on how compelling the match-up was. I'm not going to watch the NFL over college if I don't have a rooting interest.

Nothing changes for me. Now if ABC/ESPN or Fox would have picked up these games, you might have a story because these networks support the G5 conferences.

Damn, I hate Thursday night NFL. They give those games to teams that no one wants to watch on MNF or the Sunday night matchups.

The good news for college football is a large number of those Thursday games may feature the Titans, which will keep viewership down.

Will only feature the Titans when they play the Colts....Expecting big things from Wisenhunt if he can get a QB..

they stopped doing those for whatever reason. You'd think they would love to do Sat. primetime in Dec.

They will NEVER EVER (almost) play games on Friday or Saturday, if it is up against college football. The NFL doesn't have its antitrust exemption if they have a game at times when college games are typically played. which specifically and legally comes to between the hours of 6 pm Friday and 12 am Sunday, beginning on the second Friday in September and ending on the second Saturday in December.

This all comes from the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961.

That's all well and comforting, but this announcement specifically mentions producing two Saturday games for the NFL.

EDIT: never mind. Caught ya'lls word above.

The NFL has always played a couple of weeks of Saturday football in early December; it's after the college season is over and before the bowl season begins. The calendar's been getting squished a bit with the expansion of the bowl schedule but there's nothing new with Saturday NFL games in Dec.

The people who are in charge of each Bowl (SHOULD) know about the SBA. They SHOULD know the risk they are taking if they put their game on a Saturday night, potentially going against a NFL game.

When is this? I only recall playoff games coming on Saturdays for the NFL, not any regular season games.
