I appreciate the squeaky-clean Pastner and the wonderful young men our players are.

But I admit-- I do occasionally get nostalgic for the renegade bad-boy program the Tigers once were.

of course they feel different, we no longer have to sneak bottles of Old Grandad into games.

We should embrace it, but instead we run from it.

I dunno, we've got an accused rapist and a convicted larcenist on the team.

I just don't believe that is the view of all Tiger fans. Certainly not mine.

The piped in Metallica and AC/DC helps the Grizz games seem louder. The problem at the Tiger games is lack of student interest. The Blue Crew has jumped the shark. Our lower level fans take way too much of a beating on here. Watch Michigan play Nebraska last night and the arena was half empty. They just looked like they had more because of all the maize clad students.

The Grizzlies are now THE thing to do when it comes to basketball in this city. The Tigers are the minor league team. Even with the Tigers in a major conference, it does not match going to a Grizzlies game, especially when teams like OKC, the Spurs, or the Clippers are in town.

Diehard, old school Tiger fans will never admit it, but that's exactly what has happened. The city has grown accustomed to the quality of basketball they see at Grizzlies games. The atmosphere at a playoff game cannot be matched by ANYTHING related to the Tigers.

The Tigers beat the snot out of Rutgers last night.....and to the casual basketball fan in this city, it doesn't matter. The Dallas Mavericks are in town tonight, which is a much bigger deal.

That's just the way it is now.

Speak for yourself dude. The Grizz will never take the place of Tiger basketball. Grizz lose, well it's kinda, ok, we'll get em next time no big deal. When the Tigers lose, the whole damn city goes into a funk till the next win. And just so you'll know, as you put it, that's just the way it is. Now hurry up and run on down to Oxford and renew your football season tix for your beloved black bears.

The Grizzlies aren't the issue one way or the other.

In the 80's the student section was front & center, and their energy spilled over to the rest of the crowd. Now, the student section is sparse at best for regular games, and when there is a huge crowd (I expect a big one Saturday), it's removed so the energy doesn't spill over.

That said, the lower bowl folks are NOT duds, they're energetic, loud, & cheering, they're just not crazy college students, so there's no way it wouldn't be different.

That's just the way it is now.

Also, for new money (i.e. new businesses, new people that move to Memphis), they may have zero relationship with Univ of Memphis....but they easily support their local NBA Team.

Tigers still get great support...but just in visiting your city several times over the last 2 years...almost all the "chatter" in the winter/spring revolves around your NBA team...when, especially during Cal's last few years with the Tigers, it was not so (i.e. Tigers were #1 in town).

I don't know why you brought this up...not going to change...to me the students own it..It's there school and the apathy is what it is....Athletic Office, coach, etc..will not do anything to generate the incentive to change the culture...boring...

The get off my lawn type.

Yep. Heck, I went to the Coliseum, and even then, during "big games", the adult part-time student and guest ticket crowd would show up, some probably using their kids' student tickets, and start the "Sit down", "Down in front" stuff. We were in the bleachers behind the basket, by the band, so it's not like they were the best seats in the house. What the heck do they expect?

I thought the Pyramid stunk. Too far to drive, too far to walk, bad seats, etc. I was there for the big game against DePaul and I remember thinking this is "karma" / (insert your preference here) paying Memphis back for the foolishness that was the whole Pyramid / Sidney Shlenker rip-off scheme. Then after a few years they changed the student seats so they could sell the original ones. That hurt student attendance / enthusiasm / connection.
