And he didn't really say it in terms you are putting it.

Maybe Wilder just means we won't see an offense as good as UNC this year? Though I'd say Marshall's is pretty good if not better. I don't expect that will lose by 60 again this year though.

Agreed.
We won't lose like that again, but Marshall has the look of a top 25.

I think we will be better than last year, especially on defense.
However, any offense is only as good as the OL , and we are replacing a talented and veteran group. We saw a substantial drop in e3ffectiveness when we lost David. Without both he and DJ we lose a lot of skill and experience.

Anyone have any insight with respect to this?

I stole this response from monarchoptimist who posted in the 2014 recruiting thread:

QUOTE

During the chat today Wilder was asked about freshman who will have a major role this year and 2 of the players he mentioned, Davis Farmer & Eric Hampson, are offensive linemen.

Add those 2 to Josh Mann, Connor Mewbourne, Tyler Fischer, Troy Butler, Kyle Bottoms, Ely Anderson and Tyler Compton who Wilder mentioned when asked about the oline and it seems we have some depth.

8 offensive lineman for ODU are listed above 300 lbs. Last year we had 7 freshman offensive lineman and 5 of those were true freshman.

Would I like to add Martinez to the mix? Yes and twice on Saturdays. But I don't think the oline situation is as dire as some are making it out to be.

END QUOTE

Monarchoptimist summed it up pretty good. The right addition(s) to the O-line would be nice, but it looks like the coaches have confindence in the group we have on board.

I can definitely see Raul making an impact in the close games. So most of them.

It's my projection that Vanderbilt will be the best team that we have ever faced. NC State will be at or near the level of Pitt and Marshall will be 30-35 program.

FAU is sneaky good as well.

I agree with all points. FAU's defense worries me. They were pretty stout against some solid CUSA teams, and I don't think we've earned the title of "solid CUSA team" just yet. I think if there's going to be a win we'll have to claw to overtime for, it will be FAU.

I believe this will be the first year ODU actually has a rounded out defense. We will make some stops and that will be the difference maker in this season. The wide receivers will be bigger and faster and the running backs faster.

Minium article: Looks like we are getting a little respect from the sports-rating website. Harry breaks down their schedule analysis and suggests we could go 7 - 5.

And I thought your article was great, so I posted the the 8-4 prediction on the conference forum. There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of agreement with that assessment from the peanut gallery, but what do they know?

RE: 2014 CUSA FB schedule
Vulnerable defenses-The Monarchs are facing some pretty vulnerable defenses this season according to Phil Steele. His computers are projecting ODU to average 356 yards passing per game. He projects six of ODU’s twelve opponents to yield on average over 250 passing yards per game. Only Florida Atlantic, Marshall and NC State project to have above average pass defenses in terms of yards allowed.

Based on your article and Steele's assessments, 7-5 or 8-4 may be a reasonable expectation........

more stoked than ever!!!!
