RE: I miss DJ
Well- of we are carrying the theme here. DJ was never on a team able to defeat an AP top 25 team...while this year's team has done that twice- and I believe both may have been top ten teams at the time.

Look- I get the self flagellation, but the non-sop pining for others as a backwards way of disparaging these current kids is a fatiguing method. I wish Thomas was on the team this year...may be 18-3 instead of 16-5.

Worst 10 minute stretch really ..ever...on the heels of a 4 game win streak.

It happens. The one thing I agree with is that it is possible it will happen again. At the wrong time.

Or it will not.

Enjoy Rutgers and Gonzaga. What will help the team- and our university, is if the mantra is closer to- man we played a real stinker and SMU played really well, but we will beat their a$$ next time and we will bash this week's opponents. Or- geee Wally we loooooost so I will not enjoy anything and even if the team wins their next many games all I will do is moan about SMU.

Note- SMU lost to South Florida!!! And their crowd looked like they took the attitude that yeah we lost a stinker but here is another chance. They did not apologize, but supported their kids, the very same ones who lost to the worst team in the league.

Try it here. It helped them.

Am I mistaken? So who are we "missing" here? Finch? Kirk? Bartow?

Cal was a great defensive coach. His teams generally held opponents under 40% shooting. His teams also did pretty well in rebounding margin. Not much offensive coach I'll give you that. But there's more to coaching than Xs and Os. Two hands on rebounds, diving on the floor for loose balls.... That's just as much a part of coaching as anything IMO.

He coached and demanded supreme effort and defensive intensity. If you didn't bring it, you sat.

Absolutely to both and that's good coaching. Cal was a master motivator too and that's a HUGE part of coaching.

What happened last year?

Kentucky failed. It happens. Cal has had a tremendous career obviously and having a really bad year is something that he's probably earned the right to have.

RE: I miss DJ
I made the point last year we would miss DJ terribly. By my count, he was worth 10 defensive points game with 2-3 blocks and 2-3 more altered shots.

Add that to the possessions where he got these easy high percentage lobs due to his jumping which probably added another 3-4 points/game.

Stephens' double-double lands him Player of the Week award - Feb 3, 2014

POSTED BY:
EUROBASKET NEWS

23-year old swingman D.J. Stephens (198-G/F-90, agency: Norton Sports Management) had an amazing evening in the last round for Ilysiakos and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 16.

He had the game-high 7 points adding twelve rebounds and three assists for Ilysiakos in his team's victory, helping them to beat Panelefsiniakos (5-11) 84-75. The game rather meaningless between the teams, which do not have any influence on the top of the standings. Ilysiakos is placed at 11th position in Greek league.

Ilysiakos is rather a weak team placed in lower part in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 5-11 record. It was one of impressive evenings for Stephens as usually he does not deliver so high stats. University of Memphis graduate has very impressive stats this year. Stephens is in league's top in rebounds (2nd best: 8.6rpg) and averages solid 2.5bpg and 58.2% FGP.

Of course you're not. Defensive much?

Up all times of the day with the same spill. She's not here and choose not to be here. I wish people would give it a rest. Now back to DJ. I miss the fact that he saved our guards many times after they overplayed on the defensive end.

I think that's "spiel." 05-stirthepot
