Well, Syracuse uses two taller guards up top (Ennis 6'2"; Cooney 6'4"), as well as lengthy 3-5 men who work make to tough to pass on the interior against the zone (which is one of the better ways to attack it). Syracuse's roster is the 7th tallest average roster in the country. They also play EXTREMELY slow (345th slowest tempo), which allows them to play almost exclusively their starters (333rd in bench minutes).

But I'd point out that the zone isn't all that "effective". Syracuse is 120th in opposing eFG% and 157th in defensive rebounding efficiency. Their defense is 18th in efficiency; the clear strength of Syracuse this year is its offense.

When he has the right players it works out well. But Syracuse also had stretches where it did not work out, such as the 05, 06, 07, and 08 seasons. Anyone remember "the bubble" being renamed "The Boeheim"? But when he has his players, its a pretty nauseating defense.

Didn't Dana Kirk primarily play zone defense?

Mostly good players.

Syracuse has been really good for 25-30 years- with 1 title and I believe 3 Final Fours...and a handful of other nice tourney runs. In the same period, Duke has won 4 titles and a bunch of other deep runs, North Carolina 4 titles, UConn 3, Kansas (arghhh) a couple, KY a couple etc...

In other words, it is not the zone itself...it is the players.
